SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- Emily Dwyer and Abby Knight led the Washington State freshmen women cross country runners Saturday morning to strong finishes at the Erik Anderson Invitational at Plantes Ferry Park in the Spokane Valley.

The competition, hosted by Community Colleges of Spokane, was divided into collegiate, junior college, NAIA and unattached (non-award) categories.

Dwyer (Sammamish, Wash.) was the top Cougar woman to cross the finish line and the top woman in the collegiate category finish, but was 10th in the overall standings. Dwyer ran the 5000m course in a time of 18-minutes, 43.10 seconds. Knight (Vancouver, Wash.) was second in the collegiate standings and 19th overall in a time of 18:52.98. The other Cougar freshmen finishers included Kiah Condos (Liberty Lake, Wash.) 44th (19:37.75), CharLee Linton 55th (19:52.87), and Amanda Henderson (Pullman, Wash.) 67th (20:09.89).

"I am continually impressed by how hard these women race," Cougar Cross Country Coach Tim Riley said. "For these freshmen to compete like this is a great sign for the future. Emily Dwyer ran a solid race finishing in the top 10 and lowering her high school PR by nearly a whole minute. Abby Knight also had a 30-second PR from her best prep time."

The overall women's winner was Hillary Holt from the College of Idaho who ran the 5k in a time of 17:23.37. Gonzaga won the collegiate women's team title with 27 points with WSU second with 39 points.

Jono Lafler, a Cougar senior with only track eligibility left, was the runner-up in the overall standings, running the men's 8000m race in a time of 24:21.33. Lafler was edged out at the finish line by Greg Montgomery from College of Idaho who ran a time of 24:17.61.

The Cougar men's and women's teams will compete next Friday, Sept. 28, at the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational.
