COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Senior Kiersten Dallstream scored two goals to lead No. 19 Washington State past Syracuse 4-0 in nonconference women's soccer, Friday at the Colorado College/Fairfield Inn Invitational.
Both of Dallstream's goals, including the game-winner, came in the first stanza and gave the Cougars (2-0-0) a 2-0 advantage at intermission. It was the fourth multi-goal match of Dallstream's career, tied for fourth in WSU history, and her fifth game-winner, tied for sixth best by a Cougar.
Senior Elysse Van Leer assisted on the first tally at 24:22 and Dallstream beat Syracuse (0-2-0) goalkeeper Elizabeth Bennett-Hattan 1-one-1 at 34:01 to make the score 2-0.
The Cougar lead remained at two goals until 72:25 when Van Leer sent a cross into the box from the left side and Pittman finished for her second goal of the season. WSU closed out the scoring at 86:33 when sophomore Jacquelyn Roth redirected a corner kick from sophomore Megan Chapin and junior Emma Stolz netted her first goal of the year.
"We played very well and we certainly deserved to win," Cougar Head Coach Matt Potter said. "We were able to play everybody and share the work which helped to alleviate our concerns about the altitude."
Washington State dominated on the statsheet, outshooting Syracuse 11-1 in the first half and 23-2 in the match. The Cougars posted their second-straight shutout to begin a season for the first time in school history and ran their regular season stretch without yielding a goal to 506:14.
"Our possession was very good and gave Syracuse minimal opportunities," Potter said. "That was the key to limiting their number of shots."
