PULLMAN, Wash. --- Senior running back Chris Bruhn was the standout performer in Washington State's first spring scrimmage Saturday, rushing for 69 yards on nine carries.

The two-hour session, which was held in WSU's indoor practice facility, was highlighted by a pair of touchdowns. Sophomore linebacker Steve Dildine picked up a fumble and raced 28 yards for a touchdown for the morning's first score. Junior running back Allen Thompson provided the only offensive touchdown, bouncing off of three tacklers and reaching the endzone from 13 yards out.

Thompson, who is returning from shoulder surgery, rushed for 32 yards on three carries, and had a long run negated by a penalty. Cougar Head Coach Bill Doba was particularly pleased with Thompson's progress.

"That's great to see him out there running like that," Doba said. "We are going to continue to work him hard and hopefully he will continue to do what we have felt he could do all along."

Bruhn punished would-be tacklers throughout the scrimmage, ripping off runs of 16, 15, and 10 yards. Several of his collisions drew wild ovations from teammates on the offensive side of the ball.

WSU's leading passer was redshirt freshman Mike Reilly, a walk-on from Kalispell, Mont. Reilly had success moving the offense with short passes, completing 7 of 11 attempts for 37 yards.

Sophomore Josh Swogger hit on 5 of 13 attempts for 35 yards.

Junior wide receiver Marty Martin was the most popular target for Cougar signal callers, hauling in four passes for 31 yards.

Sophomore linebacker Brian Hall recorded the only interception of the scrimmage, taking an Alex Brink pass out of the air and returning it until the play was blown dead by Cougar coaches.

WSU's next scrimmage will take place Saturday, April 3 at 9 a.m. The annual Crimson & Gray Game will be played two weeks later, Saturday, April 17 at 1 p.m.
