PULLMAN, Wash. - Cougar Erica Perkins has been honored as the 1998 United States Tennis Association (USTA) Pacific Northwest Women's Player of the Year.
During the summer, the sophomore from Seattle, Wash. won five tournaments on the Pacific Northwest circuit receiving her first No. 1 ranking in the division. Perkins captured singles titles at the Nike Oregon State Championships and Stanley Park Open. She also claimed doubles victories at the Umpana Valley, Pacific Western, Stanley Park, Oregon State, and Pacific Northwest Opens.
"Erica has worked hard all summer," WSU coach Cari Groce said. "Being from the Northwest, it is a real honor for her to be named the region's Player of the Year. Next summer, I expect her to move on to bigger tournaments on the ITA circuit."
Perkins was also honored as one of 12 Washington State University student-athletes by Eagle Hardware & Garden this year for athletic achievement, academic excellence, outstanding leadership, and exemplary community service.
