PULLMAN, Wash. -- Phil Hinrichs, a distance runner from Pullman, Wash., has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Washington State University and compete for the Cougar Track & Field team, Head Coach Rick Sloan announced Wednesday.
"We are very pleased that Phil has decided to come to Washington State," Cougar Head Coach Rick Sloan said. "He's a tremendous athlete who has done a variety of sports throughout his high school career but he hasn't trained full-time as a distance runner. He shows tremendous potential for development and we're excited about getting him in a year-round training program and see what he's capable of."
Hinrichs is currently the Washington state 2A classification leader in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m events. Competing for Pullman High School track coach Mike Hinz, Hinrichs was the 2003 runner-up in the 1600m, finished third in the 3200m at the state 2A meet, and anchored the second-place 4x400m relay team. The Greyhounds boys won the team championship last year.
Hinrichs also played football and basketball at Pullman High. During his senior season, Hinrichs was named to the All-Great Northern League defense first team as a defensive back and to the all-GNL offense second team as a wide receiver. Coach Bob Wollan's football squad was the runner-up for the state 2A title.
As the captain of Coach Ken Swanger's basketball team, Hinrichs earned second team all-GNL honors and was selected the school's defensive player of the year.
In addition to lettering in three sports at PHS, Hinrichs has also played baseball during the summer including in the American Legion program last year.
"I am so thrilled to keep Phil in Pullman," Cougar distance coach Jason Drake said. "He is a phenomenal competitor and all-around athlete. I think when he concentrates on track and field all year he will develop into a serious contributor to our middle distance program."
Hinrichs is the son of Phil and Pam Hinrichs of Pullman. Phil Sr., is a 1980 graduate of WSU and was a pitcher on the Cougar baseball team during the 1978 and 1979 seasons.
