BERKELEY, Calif. -- Washington State University track and field teams opened the outdoor season in fine fashion with the Cougar women winning and the men finishing second at the Cal Quadrangular Meet, held Saturday, at Edwards Stadium/Goldman Track on the UC-Berkeley campus.

The Cougar women edged out UCLA, the 2001 NCAA Indoor Champions, by three points, 203 to 200. Cal was third at 149 with Washington fourth at 121.

On the men's side, UCLA won with 214 points to WSU's 181 for second. Cal was third at 155 with Washington last at 123. Dual meet results will not be available until Monday, March 19.

Arend Watkins ran an NCAA Automatic Qualifying time and personal-best record of 13.47 seconds to win the men's 110m high hurdles.

Four Cougar women reached NCAA Provisional Qualifying marks. Megan Maynard won the debut of the women's 3000m steeplechase in a PQ time of 11:02.39. In the 100m hurdles, WSU's Agneta Rosenblad finished second to UCLA's Michelle Perry, but clocked in at 13.51, for the PQ and broke her school record time of 13.61 set just last year. Rosenblad won the long jump (6.04m/19-9 3/4). The other Cougar PQs came as Randi Smith won the 400m hurdles with a time of 59.02, and Andrea Thornton was third in the hammer with a throw of 57.10m/187-4.

Adding top placings in WSU's winning score were: Erin Reed first (23.99) and Ellannee Richardson second (24.26) in the 200m dash, Reed's second place finish in the 400m dash (54.65), Whitney Evans winning the high jump (1.77m/5-9 3/4), Casey Lektorich second (42.20m/138-5) and Evans third in the javelin, Angelita Green third in the 800m (2:11.75), Anna Blue third in the 1500m (4:37.91), and Ryan Gilmore third in the 5000m (17:11.44). Both WSU relay teams were second.

WSU's men finished one-two-three in the javelin with Ryan Nichols throwing 64.16m/210-6 for the win, followed by Bryan Jones (61.32m/201-2), and Curt Borland (60.90m/199-10). Matt Alverson won the high jump by clearing 2.15m/7-0 1/2. Benson Jones, just a week past his indoor All-America performances, won the triple jump (15.66m/51-4 1/2) and placed second in the long jump (7.48m/24-6 1/2).

Anson Henry ran lifetime-bests but was runner-up to UW's Ja'Warren Hooker's PQ times in both sprints. In the 100m dash, Hook ran 10.33 while Henry clocked in at 10.36, and in the 200m dash, Hooker finished in 20.57 while Henry ran a 21.17.

Other high-placers for the Cougar men included: Eric Dudley finished third in both the 110m hurdles (14.68) and the 400m hurdles (52.71), Kyle Barker took second in the men's steeplechase (9:06.73), Anthony Buchanan was third in the 100m dash (10.51), Qieed Ishmael was third in the 400m (48.59), Jacob Hazelquist was third in the 800m (1:53.69), Jon Welsh finished third in the 1500m (3:47.29), Rick Collins in the pole vault (4.85m/15-11), and Sam Lightbody in the discus (51.62m/168-2). The WSU relay teams were second in both events.

Next week, the WSU teams travel to Tempe, Arizona, for the Baldy Castillo Invitational Meet.

Rick Sloan Quotes on Cal Quad Meet: "I think the only dual meet we lost was with UCLA on the men's side so we're just thrilled to death with those results. Anytime we can perform that well against talent like UCLA, Cal and Washington, and come out on top, that is a great testament to what we are doing with the program.

"Good performance by Arend Watkins in the high hurdles with a 13.47 lifetime best. We didn't know if he was going to be able to run a couple of days ago because of a bruised heel in practice. He also led off the relay team in 40.54. He had a good day.

"Anson Henry had two very good performances in the 100m and 200m. That was fantastic with the level of performance he's showing in the first outdoor meet at those distances.

"Great performance by Jacob Hazelquist in the 800m. He had only been running in the 1:56 to the 1:59 range and dropped down to 1:53 and was leading the race all the way down the home stretch and just got caught by two guys at the very end. A great job and a very gutsy race.

"Another great performance from the distance runners was Jon Welsh with a 3:47 in the 1500m and it was a real gutsy performance by him as well, down the stretch, holding off the Washington runner. Will Thrift ran well in the 5000m with a lifetime best performance for fourth.

"Kyle Barker in the men's steeplechase, a very strong race. He came on very strong in the last lap with lots of momentum at each one of the hurdles and came from a ways back and just started passing people. A fantastic race for Kyle.

"Megan Maynard ran a school record in the steeplechase but also an NCAA provisional mark. She handled the field quite well and looked very strong. Megan is back to her form of a couple of years ago and we're looking forward to her competing for us in the steeple and the 3k and the 5k for us. She's going to do a great job here in her junior year.

"Erin Reed with a terrific job in the 200m and 400m with lifetime bests in both races. I'm happy to see Tiffany Giles, who gave us a 54.3 relay leg and is starting to show the form we had hoped from her. That is just going to make us stronger and give us more diversity as we go down the road."

"I'm really pleased with the overall performance of the team and the effort that people made. We don't have Cicely on this trip (still rehabbing an ankle injury) and that's a lot of points."
