WSU Inches Closer to 1st Place After Impressive Second Round Showing

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Washington State women's golf team improved its team score by 12 strokes from the first round, maintaining a hold on second place after two rounds at the Lady Moc Classic at the Par 72, 5,997 yard Cleveland Heights Golf Course at Lakeland, Fla., Saturday.

Sophomore Maria Kostina climbed into third place with a 2-under 70 to lead the Cougars, and now sits two shots back of leader Samantha Richdale of Illinois State (74-70, E). Stephanie Parsley moved up four spots to eighth place with a 3-over 75, followed by Kim Welch who climbed the leader board from 29th into a tie for 14th with a 4-over 76.

Katharine Dorris moved into the Top 25 with a 5-over 77, which was good enough for a tie at 22nd, followed by Jay-Lee Longbottom who is tied at 26th. The greatest gainer for the Cougars on the day came from Ashleigh Gilhuly who shot 15 shots lower in the second round and vaulted herself up thirty spots into a tie for 68th.

The Cougars as a team inched closer to leader Florida Atlantic, gaining four strokes on the squad with one round left to play. The Cougars look to capture their second consecutive title this spring. Last week, the Cougars were victorious at the Inland Collegiate at Lewiston, Idaho.

The third round of action at the Lady Moc Classic gets under way with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, March 2. Continue to look to wsucougars.com for more information on the Cougars play in the Sunshine State.
