LINCOLN, Neb. - Julie Pickler placed fourth in the pentathlon as the Washington State University men and women track and field team competed in the first day's events at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational Indoor Track Meet in the Bob Devaney Center on the University of Nebraska campus.
Julie Pickler, a redshirt sophomore from Sachse, Texas, scored a personal best and NCAA Provisional Qualifying total of 3,759 points. Her pentathlon event marks were 8.84 seconds in the 60m hurdles, a PR of 5-feet, 6 1/2 inches (1.69m) in the high jump, 34-9 3/4 (10.61m) in the shot put, a long jump of 17-6 3/4 (5.35m), and a time of 2:24.72 in the 800m run. Pickler, who has a PR of 19-4 1/4 in the long jump, fouled her first two long jump attempts Friday night and had to take a conservative third attempt to stay in the competition, costing her points in the final total.
In the open events, Diana Pickler (RS-soph., Sachse, Texas) finished seventh in the long jump with a season-best leap of 18-8 1/2 (5.70m). Cougar teammates Kaylee Gardner (sophomore, Bellingham) finished eighth with a PR of 17-11 3/4 (5.48m) and Katie Miller (junior, Vancouver, Wash.) was 11th with mark of 17-4 3/4 (5.30m).
Cougars ran in preliminary heats for eight events Friday night to qualify for the Saturday semifinals and/or finals. In the women's events, Diana Pickler ran 8.87 and Miller ran 8.80 to advance to the 60m hurdles semifinals. Nicole Hatcher (junior, Kennewick) raced to a 7.71 time in the 60m dash and advances to the semifinals but her 200m dash time of 25.01 did not move her into the final of that race.
In the men's events, Darion Powell (junior, Kirkland) ran the 60m hurdles in 8.23 and will race in the semifinals. Jaycee Robertson (sophomore, Spanaway) clocked in a time of 6.95 in the 60m dash and will race in the semifinal but Jarrell Nelson's (sophomore, Bremerton) time of 7.10 left him in the prelims. Robertson (22.50) and Nelson (22.62) both ran PRs in the 200m dash but both were not fast enough for the final. A pair of Cougs will run in the 400m dash final as Dione Cason (RS-junior, Long Beach, Calif.) ran a time of 48.80 and John Cassleman (sophomore, Pullman) ran a season-best time of 48.48. Eric Nygard's (RS-junior, Wenatchee) time of 49.86 did not qualify for the eight-man final.
Results from the Cougars competing at the McDonald's Collegiate Meet (Moscow) will be included with the Saturday results from the conclusion of the Husker Invite.
