WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington State senior Elisabeth Fournier has been named Bank of the West Pac-12 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for March 12-18, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.
Fournier won both of her singles matches to help the Cougars post back-to-back upsets of No. 26 Arizona and No. 27 Arizona State. In Friday's win over No. 26 Arizona, Fournier dropped the opening game then charged back to win 12 of the next 13 games for a convincing 6-2, 6-0 win over No. 85 Natasha Marks. Fournier followed that with a come-from-behind, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Michelle Brycki of No. 27 Arizona State.
The win over Arizona State was the first in school history, snapping an 18-match skid against the Sun Devils. The weekend also was the first time WSU has defeated back-to-back opponents ranked in the top 30 nationally.
With the win Fournier, who reached the NCAA Singles Championship in 2010, improved to 25-5 on the season while the win over Brycki was the 100th of Fournier's career, extending her school record in that category.
This marks the second Player of the Week honor for Fournier this season, having also been named for the week of Jan. 23-29.
