Cougars Collect Six Singles Victories During First Day of ITA Regional

STANFORD, Calif. - Washington State boasted seven wins at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Friday. Three Cougars are undefeated in singles play after the first day of competition.

Senior Nora Gaal tallied her fourth and fifth wins. Gaal blanked Nevada's Christine Tilley, 6-0, 6-0 in the round of 128. In her second match, Gaal knocked off Jessie Strunk of Santa Clara, 6-3, 6-0. Gaal will square off against No. 6 seed Theresa Logar of Stanford at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The two wins by the Cougar captain places her ninth on the Cougar all-time singles victories list with 60.

Senior Chris Martinez, a native of San Luis Potosi, Mexico defeated Kendall Bates of Gonzaga, 6-2, 6-3 and went on to put down Nevada's Audrey Bardot, 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 64. Martinez will face No. 5 seed Sacramento State's Margrita Karnaukva at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in a round of 32 match.

Sophomore Amy Toth also notched two wins to bring her victory total to five on the season. Toth defeated Falon Lopez of Cal Poly, 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 128 and went on to knock off Oregon's Jamie Marshall, 6-3, 6-1. Toth will face No. 11 seed Anne Yelsey of Stanford in a round of 32 match Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

"We implemented our strategy really well and we came out to win," WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart said.

Senior Orsolya Sallai endured only her third loss on the season. Sallai fell to Anna Leksinska of Oregon, 7-5, 6-3. Sallai will face Joanna Laranjinha of San Francisco at 8 a.m. Saturday.

In doubles competition the Cougar duo of Martinez/Sallai advanced to the quarterfinal round. They put down Kendall Bates/Sirrah Williams of Gonzaga, 8-4 in the round of 64. The duo went on to defeat Cal Poly's Chelsey Thompson/Noelle Lee by a score of 9-8. The Cougar pair will compete again Sunday in the quarterfinals. Cougar tandem Gaal/Toth fell to Stanford's Theresa Logar/Joanna Kao, 8-5.
