PULLMAN, Wash. -- Jono Lafler, an outstanding distance runner at Tahoma High, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend and compete for Washington State University, Cougar track and field head coach Rick Sloan announced Thursday.

Jonathan "Jono" Lafler, a senior from Maple Valley, Wash., won the 2007 Nike Team National Northwest and the 2007 Nike Pre-Nationals cross country meets. He was the runner-up at the 2007 Nike Border Clash IX cross country race which pits the top 40 Oregon high school runners (boys and girls) against the top 40 Washington runners as determined by the state meets. Lafler placed 10th at the 2007 Foot Locker Western Regional meet and ran in the Foot Locker National Championships as one of the top 40 runners in the country.

He was selected to the All-South Puget Sound league first team and the All-Bowerman team. His track personal-bests include an 800m time of 1-minute, 55.86 seconds, a 1600m time of 4:14.63, and a 3200m time of 9:19.37. He was a prep teammate of current Cougar middle distance standout Luke Lemenager.

"Jono is one of the top prep distance runners in the country and will have an immediate impact to our cross country and track programs," Cougars Cross Country and track distance coach Jason Drake said. "We are very excited that he chose our program. He won several national caliber cross races last fall and qualified for the Foot Locker Nationals as well. He will really help us in the distance events during his career here. Anytime you get a blue chip recruit such as Jono, it says good things about where your program is going."

Lafler joins already announced 2008-09 Cougar track and field signees: Anna Albrecht, a thrower from Pullman, Brianne Brown, a 400m runner from Spokane, Wash., Morgan Clem, a hurdler from East Wenatchee, Wash., Michelly Foley, a distance runner from Crook County High, Prineville, Ore., Ashley Kenney, a discus thrower from Spokane Valley, Wash., Courtney Kirkwood, a heptathlete from Othello, Wash., Jessica Yates, a triple jumper from Snohomish, Wash., Alex Ringe, a middle distance runner from Hermiston, Ore., Chris Selvar, an 800m runner from Kent, Wash., and Mietra Smollack, a distance runner from Oak Harbor, Wash.
