COUGARS READY TO RUN, JUMP AND THROW AT OPENER: Washington State University's indoor track and field teams open the 2007 season with the Sixth Annual WSU Indoor Open...the WSU Indoor Facility's Mondo track will feature racing at 60m, 200m, 400m, mile, 800m and 3000m with 60m hurdles as well as a co-ed 4x400m relay...jumping and throwing field events will be contested on the turf inside the oval...men's 35-pound and women's 20-pound weight throws take place Friday, Jan. 18, at 4 p.m...remaining field events will begin Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with running events set to start at 10 a.m...complete results will be posted at www.wsucougars.com, following the meet's completion.

OR JUST WATCH: All competitors are to register online no later than noon, Jan. 16, at www.DirectAthletics.com for a $10 entry fee...late entries will be charged an additional $10 for signing up the day of the meet...spectators may watch Friday's and Saturday's events free of charge...free parking is available in the small Green Lot to the south of Indoor Practice Facility or behind and below the IPF.
ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 35th season with the Cougar track program; 14th year as a head coach, 13th year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program...he is joined by associate coach Debra Farwell, and assistant coaches Jason Drake (Head Coach Cross Country), Mark Macdonald, Ellannee Richardson and Matt McGee...former WSU All-American heptathlete Diana Pickler is a volunteer assistant coach this season along with Bob Frey and Luan Weekes.
RETURNING COUGAR WSU OPEN INDOOR CHAMPIONS: Five WSU women and five Cougar men who won events at the 2007 WSU Open will be competing in the 2008 meet...women's winners included: Princess Joy Griffey (60m dash), La Shawnda Porter-Red (200m), Sara Trané (mile), Marisa Sandoval (800m), and McKenzie Garberg (shot put)...men's winners were: Chris Concha (800m), Robert Williams (60m hurdles), Trent Arrivey (high jump), Kyle Schauble (long jump), and Moreno Zapata (triple jump)...in the women's mile, Trané, Collier Lawrence and Meghan Leonard all broke the meet record with Trané's time of 5:04.02 topping the list...Garberg's 14.55m/47-9i shot put was also a meet record...Porter-Red also won the 60m and 200m dashes at the 2006 WSU Open.
COUGARS AND THE MPSF INDOOR HISTORY: Because the Pacific-10 Conference does not sponsor indoor track and field competition, Washington State University competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for an indoor track conference title, joining teams from the Pac-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic, West Coast and Big West Conferences...at the 2007 MPSF Indoor Championships, the women's team finish order was: 1. Arizona State (135), 2. Stanford (96), 3. California (80), 4. Washington (73.5), 4. Arizona (73.5), 6. Washington State (72), 7. Oregon (65.5), 8. UCLA (40.5), 9. Long Beach State (15), and 10. UC Irvine (8)...placing for the men's teams were: 1. Washington (109), 2. Arizona (88), 3. Oregon (86), 4. Stanford (79.5), 5. Arizona State (79), 6. California (64), 7. Washington State (63.5), 8. Long Beach State (50), and 9. UCLA (35)...the 2008 MPSF Championships are slated for February 29 and March 1, at the University of Washington Dempsey Indoor Facility.
NATIONAL POLLS: The Trackwire Top 25 Poll and the Trackwire Dandy Dozen rankings have ceased to exist as of a Jan. 2, 2008, announcement on the internet site...the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) will being indoor team rankings January 30.
ABOUT THE COUGAR WOMEN: The Cougar women will be without the services of five-time All-American Julie Pickler and four-time All-American Diana Pickler, mulit-events competitors who have graduated...All-American discus thrower McKenzie Garberg returns to throw shot put and weight throw indoors...cross country All-American distance specialist Haley Paul returns after redshirting the fall harrier season...other WSU women returnees who scored at the Pac-10 meet includes Sarah Burns (triple jump), McKinnon Hanson (high jump), Lorraine King (400m hurdles), Collier Lawrence (steeplechase), Meghan Leonared (steeplechase), La Shawnda Porter-Red (200m), and Sara Trané, defending steeplechase champion...one newcomer looks to make a splash immediately, Ebba Jungmark, a freshman high jumper from Sweden who brings a lifetime-best height of 6-3 1/2.
ABOUT THE COUGAR MEN: Returning outdoor All-American for the Cougar men is Matt Lamb, a two-time discus placer...WSU men with NCAA outdoor experience includes Jon Jeffreys (javelin so no indoor event), Rickey Moody (long jump and heptathlon), Robert Williams (60m hurdles), Justin Woods (100m, 200m dashes), and Moreno Zapata (triple jump)...Pac-10 scorers from last year to add to the above group includes Trent Arrivey (high jump), Nathan Bache (javelin), Kyle Eaton (high jump), Reny Follett (400m), Barry Leavitt (400m hurdles), and Philip MacArthur (hammer)...a freshman with a first-class resumé is national prep hurdles record-holder Jeshua Anderson who also spent a successful fall on the WSU football team.
