WATERLOO, Iowa - The Washington State men's team finished 16th and the Cougar women's finished 21st in their respective section races at the NCAA Pre-National Cross Country Meet Saturday, at the Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course at Waterloo, Iowa.
Senior Anna Blue (Olympia) had an outstanding day, running the 6,000-meter course in a time of 20-minutes, 42.7 seconds which was the 14th-best time of the women's Purple race and 23rd-fastest overall. Ana Cabrera finished 77th while freshman Kayle Peterson finished 124th. Completing the Cougar scoring squad were Molly Bull (134th) and Julia Corbett (187th).
WSU freshmen Karen DeMartini (200th) and Kelly Ramirez (201st) rounded out WSU's Gold race competitors. Another pair of Cougar freshmen, Katie Troy and Natalie Smith, finished 49th and 60th, respectively, in the Open race.
"Anna ran an awesome race," Cougar Coach Jason Drake said. "She ran perfectly even, all the way through, and kept moving up and moving up and she finished at 14th. A great race for her. Ana Cabrera looked good and Kayle Peterson had a great race. The women did pretty well."
The WSU men's team, ranked 29th coming into this race, had a disappointing day. Senior Ian Johnson (Spokane) was the Cougars' top placer at 64th, finishing the 8,000-meter course in a time of 24:40.6. Juniors Mike Heidt and Danny Wolf finished 70th and 78th respectively. Freshmen Andrew Jones (101st) and Matt Knoff (146th) were the final Cougar scorers. Another freshman, Alex Grant (204th), and senior transfer, Steve Barrus (240th), were the final WSU runners in this race. Junior Justin Ireland finished 42nd in the men's Open race.
"Not a real good day on the men's side," Drake said. "Everyone was off a little bit and we'll have to sit down and figure out what happened. Ian was our number one man. He had an alright race but our top three guys just seemed to be a little off the mark. Both freshmen Andrew Jones and Matt Knoff looked good and did a nice job for freshmen."
Because of the competition's large numbers, the 70 men's teams and 65 women's teams were divided into two sections, purple and gold, host school Northern Iowa's colors. The teams were assigned into alternate races based on national rankings to avoid the top ranked teams all competing in the same race. In addition to the 483 men and the 432 women racing in the invitational sections, another 109 men and 105 women raced in open competition.
In the women's team races, BYU won the Purple, and Stanford won Gold races, while Colorado (Gold), and Stanford (Purple) won the men's races.
Both Cougar teams will train in Pullman for the next two weeks in preparation for the Pac-10 Championship Meet, Saturday, Nov. 1, at the WSU Golf Course.
