TEMPE, Ariz. - The Washington State soccer team (5-5-2, 0-2-0 Pac-10) lost 2-1 in overtime to Arizona State (5-6-1, 1-0-1 Pac-10) at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium Sunday. ASU's Elizabeth Bogus scored the game winner in the 110th minute of the Pacific-10 Conference match.
The Sun Devils took a 1-0 lead at the 16:43 mark when Bogus crossed the ball to Katie Leahy who beat WSU goalkeeper Katie Hultin to score her fifth goal of the season.
Cougar leading scorer Alix Rustrum tied the match 1-1 less than two minutes later, beating ASU goalkeeper Kim Bingham on a breakaway from 10-yards out from the right side. The goal was Rustrum's sixth of the season and her second of the weekend.
Going into halftime the Sun Devils led the Cougars 9-1 in shots, forcing Hultin to record four of her nine saves in the first period.
WSU held strong to take the game into overtime, defending 10 ASU shots and six corner kick opportunities. The Cougars took three shots in the second period, forcing Bingham to make both of her saves in the half.
Washington State's defense fended off six ASU shots in the two 10-minute overtime periods but at the 109:40 mark Bogus gave the Sun Devil's the 2-1 victory by chipping the ball over Hultin from 10-yards out.
The Cougars continue conference play next weekend, hosting UCLA Friday at 1:30 p.m. and USC in a noon match Sunday at Lower Soccer Field.
