BERKELEY, Calif. -- Four Washington State track and field competitors completed the first day of the heptathlon and decathlon competition Wednesday at the 14th Annual Cal Multi Meet at Edwards Stadium/Goldman Field in Berkeley.
Jasmine Johnson-McKeown (freshman, San Bernardino) is in second place after the first day of the heptathlon with 3,063 points, 133 points behind leader Cassie Merkley of Idaho State. Angela Jensen (junior, Tacoma) is in third place with a first day total of 2,988 points.
Johnson-McKeown opened with a 100m hurdles PR time of 15.37 seconds and cleared 5-feet, 1 3/4 inches (1.52m) in the high jump. She had the top mark in the shot put with a distance of 41-11 1/4 (12.78m), and ran the 200m in a time of 25.34.
Jensen ran the 100m hurdles in a time of 14.15, fastest in the A group section and then high jumped 5-1 3/4 (1.52m). Jensen threw the shot put 30-2 3/4 (9.21m), and ran the 200m in a time of 25.38.
Kyle Schauble (senior, Kennewick) is in seventh place in group A with 3,399 points after the first day of the decathlon. Ramsey Hopkins (freshman, San Diego) has 3,255 points for 10th place after the first five events.
Schauble ran a 100m dash time of 11.14, long jumped 20-6 1/2 (6.26m) and threw the shot put a PR distance of 35-4 1/2 (10.78m). He cleared 5-9 1/4 (1.76m) in the high jump and ran a 400m dash time of 50.34.
Hopkins ran the 100m in 11.51, long jumped 21-8w (6.60m), threw the shot put 29-3 1/4 (8.92m), cleared 6-0 3/4 (1.85m) in the high jump and ran a 400m time of 52.72.
The competition resumes Thursday morning in Berkeley.
