CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Washington State women's golf team is currently in fourth after day one at the Giustina Memorial Classic. The team's opening two rounds at the par 72, 6,282-yard Trysting Tree Golf Club put the Cougars only one stroke back from third and four back from second.

Freshman Ali Thompson led the way for the Cougars in her second collegiate event posting a 79 (+7) and a 72 (E) with five birdies for a total of 151 (+7) and is currently tied for fourth place. Last week in the WSU-hosted Inland Cup Thompson finished fifth with a tournament total of 229 (+9) and is on pace to crack the top five in her second consecutive tournament.

Fellow freshman Emma Betland also had a successful opening day in Corvallis carding a 74 (+2) and a 78 (+6), and is only one stroke behind her teammate in a tie for seventh place. Betland is trying to make this her second consecutive top 25 finish.

The two upper classmen Kristen Allard and junior Allison Travis are currently tied for 26th. Allard, a sophomore, shot a 75 (+3) and an 84 (+12) for a total of 159 (+15) while parring 21 holes. Travis carded an 81 (+9) and 78 (+6) for a two-round total of 159 (+15).

Freshman Ellen Park finished day one in her second collegiate career event with a 83 (+11) and an 84 (+12) for a tournament total of 167 (+23).

The women have fared well in their first two events and are looking to improve this week. The Cougars posted a team total of 309 in the first round and 312 in the second for a tournament total of 621, which is three strokes better at this point in the tournament than last week in the Inland Cup.

The final round of the Guistina Memorial Classic will resume Tuesday with tee times beginning at 7:45 a.m.
