PULLMAN, Wash.- The Washington State women's tennis team signed Chris Martinez-Hernandez for the 2001-2002 season, head coach Cari Groce announced Monday.

A native of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, Martinez-Hernandez, is the second Mexican woman tennis player in Cougars' history.

Her sophomore year Martinez-Hernandez captured the state, regional and sectional championships. During her junior year, she earned the national doubles title. As a senior, she was crowned national singles champion and national doubles runner-up.

"We are very excited to have Chris join our team," Groce said. "She is coming to us as a very strong singles and doubles player, which doesn't happen very often. We expect her to start out the top half of our singles line-up, and be a strong doubles player. Having worked with Lorena and other players from Mexico, I know they play with a lot of emotion and a lot of pride. I think it is to WSU's advantage to get another player that is so self-driven."
