WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Washington State University women's basketball team was predicted to finish sixth in the 2009-10 Pacific-10 Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, the highest prediction for the Cougars since the poll began prior to the 1998-99 season.

"The Pac-10 will be much stronger than it was last year," WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. "It is nice to see that coaches around the conference are acknowledging the hard work our student-athletes have been putting in, and that they have confidence that the Cougars will continue to move up the conference standings. However, we plan on finishing higher than sixth."

Prior to this season, the highest the Cougars had been predicted to finish was eighth in 1998-99.

WSU was predicted to finish ahead of Oregon State (seventh), Oregon (eighth), Arizona (ninth) and Washington (10th). Stanford was predicted to win the Pac-10 title in 2009-10.

The following is the complete poll, including total points (first-place votes are in parentheses):

1. Stanford (9) - 81
2. California - 67
3. Arizona State (1) - 64
4. UCLA - 63
5. USC - 48
6. Washington State - 33
7. Oregon State - 29
8. Oregon - 23
9. Arizona - 22
10. Washington - 20

Before opening the 2009-10 regular season against UC Davis Nov. 15, WSU will square off against Lewis-Clark State (Nov. 1; 2 p.m.) and Eastern Oregon (Nov. 8; 2 p.m.) in exhibition contests. Each of the three games will be played at Friel Court in Pullman.
