Track & Field to Compete at MPSF Indoor Championships

FLAGSTAFF NEXT STOP FOR THE COUGARS: The Washington State University indoor track and field teams compete this weekend at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track & Field Championship Meet...originally scheduled for Long Beach, Calif. (moved when the Southern California meet promoters failed to secure funding) this year's championships will be staged at the Walkup Skydome on the Northern Arizona University campus in Flagstaff, Arizona, the Cougars will not only be competing against athletes from 10-11 other schools, but with the altitude factor as Flagstaff sits at 6,905 feet above sea level...the WSU women are the two-time defending champions...Friday night's events begin at 5:30 p.m. (MST) with the 3,000m races and end with the 200m dash prelims at 9 p.m...Saturday's events start at 10:15 a.m. with the 5,000m races and the final event, the distance medley relay races, are set to begin at 2:05 p.m...the University of Arizona will act as the host school for the MPSF see the qualifying standards, the MPSF best marks, and the complete meet schedule, go to

INDOOR TEAM HISTORY: Because the Pacific-10 Conference does not sponsor indoor track and field competition, Washington State University competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for indoor track season joining teams from the Pac-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic, West Coast and Big West Conferences...the Cougar women's team won the MPSF Indoor Championships in 1999 and 2000 while the WSU men's team finished fourth in 2000...Cougar Coach Rick Sloan was named West Region Women's Indoor Coach of the Year by the US Track Coaches Association.

ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 28th season with the Cougar track program (seventh year as a head coach, sixth year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program)...Sloan was named District VIII Coach of the Year in 1998, 1999 and 2000...he is joined by associate coach Debra Lombardi Farwell, assistant coaches Dr. James Li, Mark Macdonald, Kris Grimes, and Francesca Sewell...WSU's volunteer assistant coaches are Dan O'Brien and Bernard Lagat.

NOTEABLE: Freshman speedster Tamara Gulley (San Jose, Calif.) will not be competing at this weekend's MPSF...Gulley is not able to put full pressure on her heel when in running shoes and is working on rehabilitation.
