PULLMAN-Wash. -- For the first time in 11 years, the nation's top-ranked men's college basketball team is coming to Pullman. Washington State hosts No. 1 Stanford Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at Friel Court.

It will be the first time the nation's top-ranked team has visited Pullman since No. 1 Arizona came to town March 2, 1989. It will also be just the 12th game involving the No. 1 team to be played on the Palouse.

Stanford reclaimed the nation's top spot in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls after Temple upset Cincinnati, last week's No. 1 team, 77-69 Sunday. The Cardinal, 22-1 overall and 11-1 in the Pac-10, are coming off Saturday's 101-50 dismantling of California. WSU brings a 5-17 record (0-13 Pac-10) into Thursday's game.

The Cougars have never defeated the nation's top-ranked team, though they have been close several times. In 1970, WSU fell two points shy in a 72-70 loss to UCLA. Nine years later, the Cougars again pushed the top-ranked Bruins to the brink before falling 110-102 in triple overtime in one of the most exciting games in WSU history. The last No. 1 team to visit Pullman, Arizona in 1989, had an easier time, winning 74-48. The highest-ranked team ever defeated by WSU was No. 4 Oregon State, a 69-51 loser at Pullman in 1980.

Tickets are still available for Thursday's game. Prices are $14 for reserved seats, $8 for adult general admission and $3 for youth general admission. There is also a family plan available for $16. Thursday night is ASWSU club night and all students showing a club identification card or wearing a club shirt will be admitted free. And as always, WSU students will be admitted free with their student sports pass. For more information, call the WSU ticket office at 1-800-GO COUGS.
