Watkins Improves High Hurdles Time To 13.73

STANFORD, Calif. -- Field events paced the day for the Cougar track and field teams competing in the first day (and night) of the Stanford Invitational Meet, at Cobb Track & Angell Field on the Stanford campus, Saturday.

WSU women placed third, eighth and 11th out of 18 competitors in the women's javelin. Senior Molly Monroe threw a 150-4 for third, while freshman Casey Lektorich was eighth at 143-6, and senior Anna Church finished 11th with a throw of 136-9.

Jeannette Martus was second in the women's pole vault after clearing 12-5 1/2, and Becky Potter finished third in the shot put with a throw of 46-8 3/4.

In the women's long jump, Agneta Rosenblad finished fifth with a leap of 19-1 1/4, and Francesca Sewell was 11th at 18-1 3/4.

The women's 100m hurdles final Sunday will feature three Cougars among the nine qualifiers. Randi Smith lead the way with the top time in the prelims of 13.98 seconds. Rosenblad clocked in at 14.03, and Attrina Higgins ran a 14.17 to qualify. Sarah Odonkor finished in 14.60 but does not advance.

Sharika Higgins ran a 11.75 and Sewell clocked a 12.13 to move into the final of the women's 100m dash.

On the men's side, junior Arend Watkins improved his NCAA Provisional Qualifying time in the 110m hurdles time to 13.73 in the prelims, just .01 seconds off the automatic qualifying time. Steve Dwyer ran a 15.33 and Eric Dudley came in at 15.63, but neither moves into the final. Dwyer finished second in the men's 400m hurdles in a time of 54.11.

Ian Waltz threw the shot put 60-10 3/4 for third place.

Former Cougar, Bernard Lagat, the reigning NCAA champion in the 5,000 meters, shattered his Cobb Track & Angell Field record in the 5,000m. Lagat ran the course in 13:35.10, easily breaking his Stanford course record of 13:36.12 set last year at the Cardinal Invitational. Lagat's time also easily beat the meet record of 13:48.80 set by former Cal star, Richie Boulet, in 1998.

The collegiate portion of the meet continued late Saturday night and resumes Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
