OJAI, Calif. - The Washington State women's tennis team completed its first day of competition at the Pacific-12 Conference tournament in Ojai, Calif., Thursday.
In the championship draw, No. 108 Elisabeth Fournier played a close match against California's No. 55 Tayler Davis before falling 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round. Ksenia Googe fell to No. 7 Jana Juricova of California in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-1.
In the opening round of the invitational, Andjela Kankaras fell in her first match to Sarah Landsman of Arizona. Kankaras had no problem with the first set, taking a 6-0 victory but dropped the second set and the tiebreaker set, 6-0, 7-5.
Olga Musilovich defeated Danielle Flores of Utah in straight-sets, 7-5, 6-3. Musilovich advanced to the second round and was set to play fourth-seeded Carling Seguso of UCLA but due to weather, the match will be played tomorrow.
In the second win of the day for the Cougars, Charlotte Koning took down Hailey Johnson of Arizona. After dropping the first set, Koning came back to win posting a final score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Singles play continues tomorrow and doubles action kicks off in the morning.
The Cougars have one team in the championship bracket, Googe and Kankaras. Googe and Kankaras take on first-seed Mallory Burdette and Nicole Gibbs of Stanford. Two duos are in the invitational draw for WSU, third-seed Fournier and Koning will take on Holly Flemming and Morgan Thomas of UCLA and second-seed Elizaveta Luzina and Liudmila Vasilieva play Pascale Neubert and Rabea Stueckemann of Oregon.
