BREAK OUT THE SPIKES, OUTDOOR TRACK BEGINS: Washington State men's and women's track and field teams will open the 2002 outdoor season in Los Angeles this Saturday, March 16...the Cougars meet UCLA and California in both dual meet format (scoring 5-3-1, 5-0 relays) and triangular meet scoring (7-5-4-3-2-1, 7-5-4 relays)...there will be a limit of three individuals and one relay team per school for dual scoring and two individuals and one relay team for triangular meet scoring...UCLA hosts the meet at Drake Stadium (12,000 seats)...field events began at 8:30 a.m. with the women's hammer...running events commence with the women's steeplechase at 12:30 p.m...UCLA's women's team finished second in the NCAA Indoor Championships...the WSU women were tied for 19th...UCLA's men and California's teams did not participate in the national indoor meet...WSU's men finished tied for 35th...WSU's Tamara Diles, Whitney Evans and Anson Henry earned All-America at the championships.

ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 29th season with the Cougar track program (eighth year as a head coach, seventh year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program)...he is joined by associate coach Debra Farwell, and assistant coaches Dr. James Li, Mark Macdonald, Kris Grimes, and Francesca Green...volunteer coaches are Dan O'Brien and Bernard Lagat.

SLOAN RECEIVES WEST REGION COACH OF YEAR: WSU track and field head coach, Rick Sloan, was selected the United States Track Coaches Association West Region Men's Coach of the Year for the 2002 indoor season...this is the second consecutive year Sloan has been named the men's coach of the year...he was honored as the regional women's coach of the year for both 1999 and 2000.

SLOAN ON TUESDAY CONFERENCE CALL: Cougar coach Rick Sloan will be on the WSU Sports Information Weekly Teleconference Tuesday, Feb. 12 from 1:15 p.m. until 1:25 p.m....interested media members should call the WSU Sports Information Office at 509/335-COUG (2684) for the phone number and password.

DUDLEY TO REDSHIRT: Senior All-American intermediate hurdler Eric Dudley (Bellingham, Wash.) will redshirt the 2002 outdoor season...Dudley, who finished fifth in the 400m hurdles at the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Championships after winning the Pac-10 Conference title, has the fourth-best time in school history, 50.28 seconds...a mechanical engineering major, Dudley has received numerous academic honors including 2001 first team Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America...his redshirt comes as a result of a severe ankle sprain, suffered prior to Christmas, that has led to other medical problems which do not allow him to train adequately for competition.

COUGAR NCAA INDOOR HIGHLIGHTS: The Washington State women's team grabbed a second top 20 finish at an NCAA Championship finishing tied for 19th at the 2002 Indoor Meet after being tied for 18th at the 2001 Outdoor Meet...Whitney Evans claimed her fifth All-America certificate with a second place finish in the high jump (1.83m/6-0)...freshman Schquay Brignac finished 10th in the high jump at 1.76m/5-9 1/4...also scoring points for the Cougar women was Tamara Diles who placed third in the pole vault (42.5m/13-11 1/4) and earned All-America status...Anson Henry placed third in the men's 60m dash in a time of 6.67 seconds after equaling his school record time of 6.65 in the prelims...Henry's six points placed the Cougar men tied for 35th...Anthony Buchanan finished 10th in the 200m dash with a prelim time of 21.15.

RANKINGS: In the March 6, Trackwire Top 25, the Washington State women's team was listed tied for 19th with 10 points...Trackwire, an online service, uses the weekly rankings to project the outcome of the 2002 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships where WSU's women finished tied at 19th with 13 points...the Cougar men were not rankings in the USTCA Team Power Rankings listed the WSU women sixth and the men 20th.
