APRIL 7, WSU VERSUS WASHINGTON DUAL MEET AT PULLMAN
DISTANCE SPECIALISTS, SELECTED OTHERS OFF TO STANFORD: While many members of the Cougar track and field teams will take the weekend off, the distance runners and selected participants in other areas will compete at the two-day Stanford Invitational...over 1,000 athletes from area high schools as well as collegiate, open, and elite track club teams will compete at Cobb Track and Angell Field...the collegiate/invitational events start Saturday at noon for field and 2:05 p.m. for running events...Sunday's competition is slated for a 9 a.m. start.
ASU BALDY CASTILLO INVITE HIGHLIGHTS: WSU's Benson Jones won both the long jump and triple jump at the Baldy Castillo Invitational Track Meet at Sun Devil Stadium. Other Cougars joining Jones in the winner's circle were Andrea Thornton with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark in the hammer, Jon Welsh in the steeplechase, and Arend Watkins with another NCAA Automatic Qualifying mark. Agneta Rosenblad broke her own school record in the 100m high hurdles, running a wind-aided 13.41 after clocking in at 13.51 last week. Jones leaped 7.40m/24-3 1/2 in the long jump and 15.26m/50-0 3/4 in the triple jump. Thornton heaved the hammer 58.64m/192-5, just off her school record of 192-9. Watkins clocked in at 13.67 seconds for the 100m high hurdles win, after running a 13.47 last week. In the multi events competition, Whitney Evans finished second with a total of 5,468 points and Ellannee Richardson was third in the nine-competitor field with 5,377 points. Both were NCAA PQ marks. Kansas State's Skujyte Austra won the heptathlon with an NCAA AQ total of 5,596 points in the seven events. Steve Dwyer scored a lifetime-best first day total of 3,500 points but did not clear a height in the pole vault and finished fifth out of the eight competitors with 6,186 points. Oregon's Jason Slye won the decathlon with 6,677 points.
ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 28th season with the Cougar track program (seventh year as a head coach, sixth year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program)...Sloan was named USTCA 2001 Men's West Region Coach of the Year and grabbed the MPSF 2001 Men's Coach of the Year...he has also earned the District VIII Coach of the Year in 1998, 1999 and 2000...he is joined by associate coach Debra Lombardi Farwell, assistant coaches Dr. James Li, Mark Macdonald, Kris Grimes, and Francesca Sewell...WSU's volunteer assistant coaches are Dan O'Brien and Bernard Lagat.
RETURNING NCAA OUTDOOR PARTICIPANTS: The Cougars' rosters show six women and one man competing this year with NCAA Outdoor Championship experience...the lone male is All-American hurdler Arend Watkins...on the women's side, All-Americans Cicely Clinkenbeard (triple jump), Whitney Evans (high jump and heptathlon), and Ellannee Richardson (heptathlon) lead the way...Agneta Rosenblad (long jump). Randi Smith (intermediate hurdles), and Andrea Thornton (hammer) also have NCAA competitive experience.
