RENO, Nevada -- Cougar junior Cicely Clinkenbeard successfully defended her triple jump title while Demetrius Murray claimed his first, and Becky Potter won the women's weight throw during the first day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Livestock Event Center at Reno.

Clinkenbeard leaped 41-feet, 2 1/4 inches for the triple jump win, an NCAA provisional qualifying mark but not close to her season-best of 41-11 1/2. Murray, unable to compete in the 2000 indoor season until Friday because of injury, demonstrated his current fitness as he leaped a career-best and NCAA PQ mark of 52-7 1/2 to win the men's triple jump.

Potter surpassed her lifetime-best by nearly a foot and a half with a winning and school record weight throw of 61-6 1/4, also an NCAA PQ. Teammate Andrea Thornton placed third with a toss of 58-9 1/4, another NCAA PQ but did not pass her season-best of 61-4 1/4.

In the other first-day women's finals, Jeannette Martus equaled her school-record of 12-7 1/2 in the pole vault and tied for fourth, with WSU freshman Stephanie Robinett placing 21st with an improved freshman school record of 11-1 3/4. Cal Poly SLO's Paula Serrano cleared an NCAA AQ and meet record 13-3 for the pole vault win. Freshman Greta Johnson just missed contributing points to the Cougar cause with her ninth-place finish in the women's 3,000m run. Stanford's Elena Villareal won in 9:43.16.

For the Cougar men, Mark Wicklander was fifth, Kyle Barker eighth and Scott Johnson ninth in the men's 3,000m run. Wicklander and Barker added five points to the WSU team effort. Stanford's Brent Hauser won the race in 8:18.46.

Craig Allen was fifth, Ezra Gordon eighth, and Matt Alverson tenth in the men's high jump competition which was won by Utah State's Lance Thurston's 7-2 1/2 leap. B.J. Schade finished fourth in the men's weight throw with a season-best toss of 59-6 3/4. James Parker of Utah State won the weight throw at 67-6 3/4.

Arend Watkins ran a meet record for the top prelim time in the men's 55m hurdles. Watkins' 7.25 surpassed former Cougar Dominique Arnold's 1996 time of 7.28.

After the first of the two-day competition, the Washington State University women's team is in second place with 30 points to Stanford's 38, and the Cougar men's team is third with 24.50 points, following Utah State's 46, and Stanford's 30.

Competition resumes Saturday at 10 a.m.
