LOS ANGELES -- Washington State's Anna Layman, Ashley Kenney, Marissa Tschida and Joe Bartlett won events Saturday at the USC Trojan Invitational Track and Field meet at Loker Stadium and Cromwell Field in Los Angeles.
Layman, a senior from Spokane Valley, won the women's 800m run in a time of 2-minutes, 8.80 seconds, with sophomore Courtney Zalud finishing third in a time of 2:10.07, just 7/100s second off her lifetime-best time. Layman also had a fourth-place finish in the 1500m race with a time of 4:39.88.
Kenney, a junior from Spokane Valley, won the discus with a throw of 154-feet, 7 inches (47.12m). In the women's javelin, Tschida, a senior from Missoula, Mont., won with a throw of 176-10 (53.90m) and Courtney Kirkwood (junior, Othello, Wash.) was the runner-up with a PR toss of 173-8 (52.94m). Kirkwood's javelin throw was a three-foot improvement on her lifetime-best which is second-best in WSU all-time marks to Tschida's school record 186-1 (56.71m).
Bartlett, a junior from Reno, won the men's shot put with a PR heave of 56-6 3/4 (17.24m) and was the runner-up in the discus with a toss of 163-1 (49.72m). Redshirt freshman Kyle Stevens (Snoqualmie) opened the season with a javelin toss of 210-feet even (64.00m) for third-place.
WSU's Brett Blanshan (sophomore, Selah, Wash.) took second place in the men's 100m dash in a time of 10.65w and third place in the 200m dash with a time of 21.68.
Cougar sophomore Shaquana Logan (Tacoma) had a busy day with a fourth place finish and PR time of 14.09 in the 100m hurdles, second place in the long jump (18-4 1/4), anchored the fourth-place 4x400m relay, and finished ninth in the 400m hurdles (1:09.06).
Mary Barnett (freshman, Hermiston, Ore.) took third place in the shot put (42-3 1/2 - 12.89m).
Washington State track and field team members also competed at the Dusty Lane Open Saturday at Spokane Falls Community College and that recap can be found on the Track & Field webpage.
Selected Cougars will compete at the Stanford Invitational next weekend.
