PULLMAN, Wash. - - - Stacey McKenna won her second Pacific-10 Conference Women's Indoor Tennis title Friday with a solid 6-3, 6-2 win over teammate Moniek van de Ven at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. The win came a week after the tournament started and five days after her first title.
Last weekend McKenna, a freshman from North Bend, Ore., teamed up with Ana Maria Moura to win the indoor championship in the second doubles flight at the three-day tournament in Seattle. When both McKenna and van de Ven reached the finals of the fourth flight in singles action, tournament officials agreed the two could play the title match in Pullman.
"My goal was to play my best, to play well, McKenna said about her entry into the Pac-10 tournament. "There no thoughts of a championships. In the doubles, Ana played really well and we were able to put it together."
"It was kind of fun to come back to Pullman for the singles title and to play Moniek," offered the former two-sport prep standout, who also excelled in volleyball.
The Cougar women, idle this weekend, will return to action next weekend in the Bay Area. Jan. 26 they will take on Stanford at Stanford, then challenge California Jan. 27, followed by a match-up with Fresno State Jan. 28.
WSU's first home action of the spring will be Feb. 22-23-24 against Hawaii, Utah and Boise State, respectively.
