Arizona State 23, Washington State 20

Pullman, Wash.
Martin Stadium

WSU Head Coach Bill Doba
On the game...
"I think we can take something positive out of it. I think our defensive staff did a heck of a job coming up with a game plan, bringing pressure and I think the entire staff did a great job getting these guys back up after a couple of tough losses."

"We were two feet away from an overtime game with the No. 18 team in the nation, but it's not a win, and that's what I stressed to the guys. We got closer, I think we got better, I think we can take some positives things from this, but we need to win."

On Alex Brink breaking the school record for passing yardage...
"I'm sure Alex would have given that record up for a win. It's nice to have the record, but I know he'd rather have the win."

WSU Wide Receiver Brandon Gipson
On the defense...
"They were amazing. The whole defense worked its tail off today. They deserve a lot of credit."

WSU Linebacker Andy Mattingly
On the defense's performance...
"The coaches put us in a situation to win. We executed pretty well. We had a couple of mistakes, but for the most part, it was a lot of the coaches calling the right plays at the right times."

WSU Tight End Jed Collins
On the effect of the loss...
"If anything we look at this game as a positive. Our defense came out and had just a great game, did everything they needed to do. We had a lot of positive plays on special teams. Offensively we struggled at times, but we still put some points up."

On Arizona State...
"They're a good team, played us real well, knew what we wanted to do and tried to shut us down. This just gives us hope. Obviously they are ranked real high and we came out and showed we can play with them."

On the next few weeks...
"Next couple of weeks we are going to play some more ranked teams. That really doesn't scare us at all. We're ready for the challenge, ready for a couple of upsets, and try to just turn the season around."

WSU Quarterback Alex Brink
On Arizona State's passing defense...
"ASU plays a lot of man-to-man defense, really kind of in your face pressure type stuff, and it really threw off our timing. They were getting in our receivers' faces, making it hard. You can't run routes as smooth as you'd like when they play tough man to man like that. We had to make an adjustment there in the second quarter."

On becoming Washington State's all-time leader in passing yards...
"Personal accomplishments don't mean a lot right now honestly. This is a rough stretch for our team. It was awesome that Jason (Gesser) got to be here for it. That meant a lot to me. It was a great gesture by him. At some point I'm sure that will sink in, but right now I'm feeling that loss."

Arizona State Quarterback Rudy Carpenter
(On competing against WSU) "We kept saying their backs were against the wall. They were 0-2 in conference and it was a must win for them. We had to come out and weather the storm. Our defense did a good job getting points for us too."

(On Quarterback Alex Brink) "He is a good kid and a good player too. He is very experienced and has been around for a while. He's a great player and having all of the WSU records, that is a tough thing to do no matter where you are at."

Arizona State kicker Thomas Weber
(On game winning kick) "It's exciting. Only the sixth game in my career and to hit a game winning field goal makes everything feel great."

(O the weather) "It was definitely cold; everyone on the sideline was trying to stay warm. The wind was blowing so we definitely had to deal with the elements."

Arizona State Head Coach Dennis Erickson
(On the toughness of the game) "I knew it was going to be a tough game coming in. I told the team there isn't going to be a tougher place to play. I've been there on both sides of it coming in here as an opposing coach and being here when other teams have come into play. A lot of teams have left here with their head between their legs so that is just how it is."

(On WSU Head Coach Bill Doba)"I've got to give Coach Doba and his staff and their players a lot of credit. The battled and fought and had a good game plan against us."

(On play today) "We didn't play like we needed to but it was a good win for us. We have a lot of things to work on. Anytime in this league when you can win one on the road it makes a difference. We showed a lot of character coming back when it was tied. It was a good win for us."

(On WSU defense) "They brought heat every down and we broke some big plays because of it. We made plays when we had to and when they blitz you on the road it is tough."

(On being 6-0) "We just have to take it one game at a time. Anytime you are 6-0 you are somewhat surprised. We've just got to keep battling and try to get seven next week."

(On running back Ryan Torain) "He took it over and our offensive front played great in the second half. He is a work horse for us and he is hard to tackle and he made a lot of big plays for us."
