J Hopkins, Men's 1600m Relay Claim Wins at Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT, Calif. -- Washington State's J Hopkins and the men's 4x400m relay team scored wins during the collegiate/open competition Friday at the 53rd Annual Mt. SAC Relays at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, Calif.

J Hopkins and Dana Wells finished one-two in the men's 400m hurdles with Hopkins winning in a time of 51.46 seconds, and Wells was the runner-up in a lifetime-best time of 51.67.

The Cougar men's 4x400m relay won in a season-best time of 3 minutes, 7.87 seconds. Seeing action for the first time in the outdoor season was lead leg Greg Hornsby, followed by Jeshua Anderson, Brandon Dawson and Jacob Sealby. This was the relay team that advanced to the NCAA Indoor Championships last month where Hornsby was injured.

Ramsey Hopkins ran lifetime-best 110m hurdles time of 14.17 seconds for second place overall and was the top collegiate finisher.

The women's 4x400m relay squad of Shawn Fermin, Briau'ana Watley, Anna Layman and Courtney Zalud finished third after running a season-best time of 3:41.28.

Friday morning racing brought several lifetime best times for Cougar runners. Matt Cronrath shaved nearly six seconds off his PR time in the 1500m finishing 15th among 146 runners with a time of 3:46.69, and Todd Wakefield ran a season-best time of 3:47.61 for 27th, Joe Abbott's time of 3:48.55 was 36th, and David Hickerson ran a PR time of 3:49.70 for 46th. Caroline Austin erased five seconds off her PR time in the women's 1500m by running a time of 4:32.81 Friday morning.

Shaquana Logan finished seventh in the women's 100m hurdles with a time of 13.83, and then ran the lead leg of the women's 4x100m relay with Chanel James, Morgan Clem, Shawna Fermin for a fifth-place finish in a time of 46.19. In the women's 400m hurdles, all three Cougar women ran season-best times. Logan's time of 1:00.42 was ninth-best while Veronica Elseroad-Wall ran a time of 1:00.69 for 10th, and Brittnay Crabb's time of 1:01.95 was 13th.

James also ran the 200m in a PR time of 24.51 (18th) and Cindy Robinson ran a season-best time of 24.75 (24th).

Sprinters Brett Blanshan and Marlon Murray finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 200m dash. Blanshan ran a time of 21.25 and Murray ran to a season-best time of 21.37. Sealby ran PR time in the 400m dash of 47.60 for eighth place and Dawson clocked a season-best time of 47.66 for 11th place.

In the field events, Christine Rice was the runner-up in the women's high jump, clearing 5-83/4 (1.75m). On the men's side, high jumpers Deonta Edwards and Ryan Deese both cleared 6-8 3/4 (2.05m) with Edwards eighth and Deese 12th. Shawn Swartz cleared a season-best height of 6-6 3/4 (2.00m).

Several Cougar competitors were scheduled to compete in events at the Mt. SAC Relays late Friday night and those results will be reported Saturday, along with results from the Beach Invite meet in Cerritos.
