INDIANAPOLIS - Tamara Diles has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning the elite women's competition on Friday at the 2002 Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nevada.

A freshman at Washington State University, Diles won the event with a clearance of 4.35 meters/14 feet, 3.25 inches. A state high school pole vault and gymnastics champion from Newport High in Bellevue, Wash., Diles smashed the WSU record of 4.04m/13-3 set last year by Jeannette Martus.

Derek Miles, who tied for third at the 2000 Olympic Trials, won the men's elite competition with a clearance of 5.70m/18-8.25.

Another impressive performance was turned in by junior prep standout Brian Dalpiaz of Sayville, New York, who won the men's 3,200 meters last Saturday at the Stanner Games at New York's Armory Track & Field Center. Dalpiaz won the event in a new meet record time of 9 minutes, 0.25 seconds, just edging Andy Wigton of upstate Greece-Athena HS, who was second in 9:03.25.

Now in its second year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF Web site. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
