PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University tennis team nearly pulled the upset but in the end the No. 20 Washington Huskies came away with a 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.

The day began with the Huskies capturing the opening doubles point. The Cougar pair of Elisabeth Fournier and Lea Jansen easily won an 8-1 decision at No. 3 over Vanja Rdaunovic and Sianna May. At No. 1 the Huskies' Venise Chan and Samantha Smith even the match as they defeated Liudmila Vasilieva and Ksenia Googe, 8-2 before Washington clinched the point following an 8-4 win by Denise Dy and Aleksandra Krsljlin over Andjela Kankaras and Olga Musilovich at No. 2.

In singles play, he Cougars evened the score as Kankarash defeated Krsljanin at No. 4, 6-2, 6-3. Washington regained its lead moments later as Smith fought off a second-set charge by Googe at No. 3 to win 6-1, 6-4.

At No. 1 the nation's sixth-ranked player, Dy, and Fournier battled through two tough sets. Dy captured the first set 6-3 then held a 5-3 lead in the second. After Fournier broke Dy to make it 5-4, she fought off a handful of match points before falling, 6-3, 6-4, making it 3-1, Washington.

At No. 2 Vasilieva, and Chan, ranked No. 27, played two close sets as Chan won the first 7-5 then captured the final three points of the tie-breaker to win 7-5, 7-6 (7-4). The win clinched the match for the Huskies, who improve to 9-7 on the season, 1-3 in Pacific-10 Conference play.

Gomez had no trouble at No. 6 as she defeated her Husky opponent, 6-0, 6-0 for WSU's second point of the day. The final match came down to No. 5, where Musolivich defeated Radunovic, 6-1, 6-1 for the final point.

The Cougars are next in action April 1 when they host UCLA.
