KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Freshman Stacy McKenna (North Bend. Ore.) notched victories in both singles and doubles play to lead No. 28 Washington State to a 4-0 victory over No. 44 Indiana in the first round of the NCAA Championships, Friday.

WSU's number one doubles team of McKenna and senior Ana Maria Moura (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), the 30th-ranked tandem in the nation, trailed 5-0 in their match before rallying to defeat Indiana's Kelly Blanch and Jessica Levin, 8-5. The victory gave the Cougars (12-8) the doubles point after WSU and the Big Ten representative Hoosiers (16-10) split the first two doubles matches.

"We got a lot of momentum when Ana and Stacy fought back and won to give us the doubles point," WSU Head Coach Cari Groce said. "After that, everyone go on the court in singles and played awesome. We couldn't be happier, going to the second round of the tournament."

The win marks the first time the Cougars have advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in three tries. WSU will face fifth seeded and third-ranked Tennessee, Saturday at 4 p.m., EDT. The host Lady Vols (24-3), from the Southeastern Conference, defeated Southern Conference champion Furman, 4-0 in Friday's first round.

With WSU up 1-0 entering singles play, the Cougars clinched the match with wins by McKenna, senior captain Tamara Filipovic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) and freshman Lorena Arias (Mexico City, Mexico).

McKenna disposed of Indiana's Amanda Field, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles to post her WSU single season record 26th victory. Filipovic defeated Katie Schlukebir, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and Arias cruised past Martina Grimm, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

The win for Filipovic was the 77th of her career, moving her within two of Andrea Reisz's school record 79.

With the match decided, singles play at the No. 1, 3 and 4 positions was suspended. WSU had captured the first set at all three positions when the match was halted.
