COUGARS WELCOME CAL, CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE TO IPF: Washington State University's indoor track and field teams take on competitors from California Berkeley, Cal State Northridge and University of Idaho this Friday and Saturday in the Cougar Indoor Meet...this will be the second weekend in WSU's home indoor Mondo track, the Indoor Practice Facility...this is not a team scoring meet...new to the indoor events schedule this year is the women's pentathlon and men's heptathlon, and these multi-events will be contested Jan. 30-31, along with the usual indoor events...the women's pentathlon will be contested entirely Friday...Friday's schedule begins at 2:30 p.m. and includes the first day of the multi-events in addition to the men's and women's weight throws and distance medley relay races...Saturday's events begin at 9 a.m...admission to the meet is $5 for adults, $2 for youth and seniors with a $10 family admission available, and free with Go Cougar Cards...WSU students will be admitted with student ID...free parking is available for spectators in the Yellow Lot between Beasley Coliseum and the WSU Tennis Courts until 11 a.m. Saturday when the lot will be restricted to permits for the men's basketball game (vs. Arizona) at Beasley Coliseum (1 p.m.)...complete results from the Cougar Indoor Meet will be posted on the WSU Athletics website, www.wsucougars.com, following the completion of the meet.

ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 31st season with the Cougar track program; tenth year as a head coach, ninth year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program...he is joined by associate coach Debra Farwell, and assistant coaches Mark Macdonald, Kris Grimes, Jason Drake and Ellannee Richardson who joins the staff after five years as an All-American heptathlete and sprinter...volunteer coaches are Dan O'Brien, Michael Friedberg, and Andrea Thornton.

INDOOR TEAM HISTORY: Because the Pacific-10 Conference does not sponsor indoor track and field competition, Washington State University competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for indoor track season joining teams from the Pac-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic, West Coast and Big West Conferences...at the 2003 MPSF Indoor Championships, Cougar women finished third while the men were seventh.

COUGAR WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS FROM WSU OPEN: Marie Muai (junior, Tacoma) broke her own school record with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying throw of 19.10m/62-8 to win the weight throw...Tamara Diles (sophomore, Bellevue) reached an NCAA PQ with her winning pole vault of 4.00m/13-1 1/2 while Karla McGee (senior, Lethbridge, Alb.) finished second at a cleared height of 3.65m/11-11 3/4...Diana Pickler (sophomore, Sachse, Texas) won the long jump with a meet record 5.60m/18-4 1/2 and won the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.59...nearly reaching double-wins was Nicole Hatcher (sophomore, Kennewick) who won the 200m dash (25.59) and placed second in the 60m dash (7.62)...Tamara Gulley (senior, San Jose, Calif.) finished second in the 60m hurdles (8.61) and tied Hatcher in the 60m dash (7.62)...Robin Mikesh (sophomore, Sumner) won the high jump with a PR leap of 1.70m/5-7...Angelita Green (senior, Long Beach, Calif.) won the mile (5:38.36)...freshman Brandi Probasco-Canda (Portland, Ore.) was the top collegiate finisher in the 400m with a time of 57.48.

COUGAR MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS FROM WSU OPEN: Tim Gehring (senior, Kettle Falls) won the shot put with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying throw of 18.74m/61-5 3/4, surpassing his lifetime-best mark by four feet and hitting the record books with the sixth-best shot put in school history...Matt Alverson (senior, Everett) won the high jump (1.95m/6-4 3/4), and Paul Nicoletti (junior, Snohomish) won the pole vault with a PR of 5.00m/16-4 3/4...Jarrell Nelson (freshman, Bremerton) was the top collegiate finisher in the 200m dash with a time of 22.62 and placed third in the 60m dash at 6.96...Barry Leavitt (freshman, Benton City) was also the top college placer in the 400m dash (51.40).
