PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State women's basketball team received career nights from freshmen Katie Calderwood and Jasmine Williams Thursday night against USC, but the Trojans grabbed a late lead and held on for a 62-58 victory at Friel Court.

Calderwood scored a career-high 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-3 from beyond the arc, and Williams added a career-high 11 points on 5-of-12 shooting, as WSU fell to 3-12 on the season and 0-4 in the Pacific-10 Conference. The Women of Troy improved to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

"I saw a lot of improvement tonight, but we are nowhere close to where we want to be," WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. "We don't feel like this is a moral victory by any stretch of the imagination. We need to keep building...So we are going to work harder and get better."

Leading for a majority of the first stanza, the Cougars entered halftime with an 11-point lead over the Women of Troy, marking the first time since Dec. 9 against Boise State that the Cougars opened the second half with the edge.

WSU built its lead to 13 points in the opening minutes of the second half, but USC climbed back into the game with a 9-0 run, cutting the lead to three at 44-41 at 12:29. A 3-pointer from Katie Calderwood put the Cougars back up by six, but USC's Heather Oliver hit a 3-pointer of her own to get the Trojans back to within three. Freshman forward Salena Dickerson then knocked down her only 3-point attempt of the game on the Cougars' next possession to build the WSU lead back to six at 50-44.

USC went on a 12-6 run over the next 8-plus minutes to tie the game at 56-56 with 1:19 remaining. The Trojans regained the lead at 59-56 with 43 seconds left on another 3-pointer from Oliver and held on for a 62-58 win.

Williams led WSU with eight boards, a career high, as WSU outrebounded the Trojans by a 42-31 margin. Sophomore guard Colleen Betteridge scored 12 points and junior guard Katie Appleton added 11 points on her 21st birthday, giving the Cougars four double-digit scorers for the first time this season.

"This group comes to practice and works hard everyday," Daugherty said. "I believe our execution was A-plus tonight. We will build on this and get ready for UCLA."

The Cougars conclude their opening conference home stand Saturday against UCLA. The game with the Bruins is slated to tip-off at 2 p.m.
