PULLMAN, Wash.- The Washington State University tennis team continued their strong start to the 2011 dual match season with a 7-0 win over Gonzaga today at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. This is the first time since 2007 that the Cougars have started the season with a 5-0 record.
In doubles play, Elisabeth Fournier and Lea Jansen beat Britta Stime and Jackie Tabb 8-2 and No. 3. At No. 2 Ksenia Googe and Andjela Kankaras defeated Clare Dodge and Kristina Zauere 8-4 to give the Cougars the first point of the match.
In singles action, Vasilieva won the No. 2 match over Zauere 6-1, 6-0. At No. 4 Kankaras defeated Dodge 6-1, 6-2. Googe beat Prue Teitzel 6-3, 6-1 at No.3 to secure the match for the Cougars.
In other singles play, Fournier battled Mehndiratta to win the hard-fought No. 1 match 6-4, 6-4. Musilovich defeated Jackie Tabb 6-3, 6-1 to win the No. 5 match. Marina Nicolas battled Sophie Lantta in the No. 6 match 5-7, 6-1, (12-10) for the win.
The tennis team will be back in action next week when it takes its first road trip of the season to Utah on Thursday Feb. 3 and to BYU on Friday Feb. 4.
