Women in Seventh with One Round to Play at the NCAA West Regional

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Washington State women's golf team is in seventh place after two rounds at the 2003 NCAA West Regional hosted by Arizona State at the Par 72, 6,256 yard Karsten Golf Course at Tempe, Ariz.

The Cougars were led by Kim Welch who shot a 2-over on a rough and windy day, moving up into a tie for second place. Welch sits just four strokes back of first place Sunny Oh of UNLV.

Stephanie Parsley and Maria Kostina finished knotted at a tie for 39th, followed by a seven stroke improvement by Jay-Lee Longbottom over the first round for a tie a 73rd, and Ashleigh Gilhuly rounding out the Cougar contingent at a tie for 91st.

The Cougars started the round on the tenth hole, finishing the back nine with only three birdies before tackling the front nine for four more and keeping the pace with the eighth best team mark of the day at 306. WSU now has a five shot lead over seventh place Stanford and a ten shot lead over ninth place Illinois. Heading into final round play tomorrow, the Cougars are just seven strokes back of third place Pepperdine.

"We have to play well again tomorrow and I think we have a real shot to earn a trip to Purdue for the Championships," said Head Coach Walt Williams. "Kim played really well today in windy conditions and everyone else played as well or much better."

The Top 8 teams at the end of the final round will be chosen to go on and compete at the NCAA Championships hosted by Purdue University. USC continues to lead all schools will a 5-over two round total of 581. The Cougars will tee off at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow for the final round of the 2003 NCAA West Regional at Tempe, Ariz.
