PULLMAN- Junior Erica Perkins will be the first WSU women's tennis player to compete in the Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Thursday in Dallas, Texas hosted by Southern Methodist University at the Brookhaven Country Club.
"I'm pretty excited," Perkins said. "I'm glad to be back, and I think this is a great opportunity for me to prove that I'm a better player now than I was before I got hurt."
Perkins will be one of nine representatives from the PAC-10 to compete in the tournament, including defending champion sophomore Laura Granville of Stanford. Granville will be attempting to become the first women's player to repeat as champion at the Rolex National Intercollegiates.
"It's been a long road to get here," head coach Cari Groce said. "We've spent a lot of years trying to get these invites, and they're starting to fall into place. I think its great, not only for Cougar Tennis, but for Erica Perkins." P> Perkins will be one of 32 of the nation's best women fighting for the singles crown. Sixteen doubles pairs will also be competing.
The competition will begin at 8:30 am Central time with the first flight of the men and women's singles competitions followed by the first flights of the men's and women's doubles competition.
The first round draw will be announced Wednesday at 3 pm Central time.
