PROVO, Utah- The No. 66 Washington State women's tennis team kicked off its season by losing to No. 25 Brigham Young 4-3, in a four and a half hour match, Friday. The Cougars captured their three points from singles matches.
"It was a heartbreaker," Washington State Head Coach Lisa Hart said. "We put ourselves in a position to win and unfortunately we couldn't come up with it."
Freshman Ekaterina Burduli downed Anastasia Sourkova in No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2. Senior Nora Gaal found success against Sofia Holden as she triumphed 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7), in the No. 4 slot. Rounding out Washington State winners was sophomore Amy Toth who held off Hadley Macfarlane, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
The Cougars were swept in doubles play to begin the match. Playing in the No. 1 spot seniors Orsolya Sallai/Chris Martinez were defeated by Lauren Jones/Hadley Macfarlane, 8-5. In their first competition as Cougars, Burduli and fellow freshmen Aleksandra Stefanova were put down by Sourkova/Dolly Chang, 8-3, while Toth/Gaal came up short against Rebecca Pike/Olga Boulytcheva, 8-5.
In No. 1 singles, Sallai could not hold off Lauren Jones in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Martinez fell to Boulytcheva in the No. 3 slot by a score of 6-3, 6-1. Rounding out the Cougar six was Stefanova, who was defeated by Pike 6-4, 6-0.
"We are really looking forward to our matches next Saturday," Hart said. "If we continue to play like we did today it's going to be a great year for us."
The Cougars will play host to both Idaho and Eastern Washington Saturday, January 29. The Cougars will face the Vandals at 9 a.m. and at 4:30 p.m. the Eagles will take the court against the Cougars. Both matches will be played at the Stadium Way Tennis Center in Pullman.
