PULLMAN, Wash. - Bragging rights for the first Hayden Homes Cougar Shootout women's basketball title will be on the line at the Spokane Arena this weekend with the Idaho Vandals, Portland Pilots, Toledo Rockets and the host Washington State Cougars vying for the championship.
The tournament tips-off at 6 p.m. Friday when Idaho (1-6) takes on the University of Toledo (4-1). In the evening's second game, WSU (3-2) will face the University of Portland (2-3) at 8 p.m. The first round losers will meet in the consolation game Saturday at 6 p.m., while the winners will face off in the championship game at 8 p.m.
Friday's opening game will feature the first meeting between Idaho and Toledo in the history of the programs. Both teams are coming off games this week. The Vandals will look to rebound from a 63-46 defeat to Montana State suffered Wednesday. The Rockets defeated Indiana State 88-67, Tuesday.
In the second game of the night, WSU and Portland will meet for the first time since Nov. 29, 1985, an 84-71 WSU win. This will be the third meeting between the two clubs as the all-time series is tied at one game each. After starting the season 2-0, the Pilots have dropped three consecutive games with the last two defeats coming at the hands of the Montana schools. WSU comes into the Portland game riding the momentum of a 68-52 come-from-behind win over Idaho Saturday. That win marked the Cougars' third win of the season, just one less than last year's win total of four.
This weekend's Shootout will serve as a preliminary for the NCAA Women's Basketball West Regional hosted by Washington State March 24 & 26 at the Spokane Arena. Tickets for the Regional can be purchased by calling 1-800-325-SEAT, online at ticketswest.com, or through any G&B Ticket Outlet.
Tickets for the Shootout are $4 for youth and seniors and $7 for adults. Two-day packages featuring all four games are $6 for youth or seniors and $10 for adults.
