TEMPE, Ariz. -- Washington State won three of the eight races run at the Baldy Castillo Invitational Track & Field Distance Carnival Friday night at Arizona State's Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium.

Anna Blue (Olympia, Wash.) captured the women's 5000m race with a Pac-10 qualifying time of 16 minutes, 55.96 seconds. Ian Johnson (Spokane, Wash.) won the men's 1500m race with a season-best time of 3:50.46. Jon Welsh (Carmichael, Calif.) won the men's steeplechase with a Pac-10 qualifying time of 8:58.7 (hand-timed) while freshman Dan Wolf (Reno, Nev.) placed seventh in 9:17.8.

Other Cougars with notable results from the first day of the two-day meet include Tim Gehring (Kettle Falls, Wash.) with fourth place finishes in both the men's shot put and hammer. Gehring's hammer throw of 190-feet, 4 inches (58.02m) is a conference qualifying mark.

Brittany Hinchcliffe (Olympia, Wash.) finished second in the women's hammer with a lifetime-best toss of 167-1 (50.94m). Teammate and fellow freshman Sammy Jo Missel (Mead, Wash.) placed sixth in the same event with a throw of 157-0 (47.85m). Shannon Rance (Renton, Wash.) threw the shot put 46-11 3/4 (14.32m) for fourth place.

In the women's 400m hurdles, Randi Smith (Valencia, Calif.) finished second in 59.58 while Alison Eldridge (Yakima, Wash.) improved her lifetime-best mark to 1:05.17 for eighth.

Cicely Clinkenbeard (Okanogan, Wash.), Ellannee Richardson (Gladstone, Ore.) and Blessing Ufodiama (Long Beach, Calif.) placed third, fourth and sixth in the women's long jump. Stephanie Robinett (Bremerton, Wash.) was second and Karla McGee (Lethbridge, Alb., Canada) placed fourth in the women's pole vault.

Matt McGee threw over 200-feet for the second week but placed third in the men's javelin. Nate Cummings (Clarkston, Wash.) was sixth and Curt Borland (Cowiche, Wash.) eighth in the same event.

The Baldy Castillo Invitational, featuring participants from 14 colleges and universities, continues Saturday.
