PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State stuck a thorn into the fifth-ranked Washington Huskies' Rose Bowl plans by upsetting UW 24-20 in the 75th battle for the Apple Cup.

The Cougars used the rushing attack of running back Tim Harris and fullback James Matthews, both of whom gained over 100 yards and scored a touchdown.

UW scored the games' first 10 points on a Tim Cowan touchdown pass to Anthony Allen followed by a 21-yard field goal off the foot of Chuck Nelson. The teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter, leaving the Huskies with a 17-10 lead at halftime.

With 9:02 left in the third quarter, Clete Casper launched a Washington State comeback with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Mike Peterson. Five minutes later, Harris found the end zone from seven yards out to give the Cougars their first lead of the game.

WSU held off an attempted Husky comeback in the fourth quarter when Nelson missed his first field goal of the year, a 33-yard try that would have given UW a 23-21 lead with 4:35 left in the game.

After completing 7-of-14 passes for 44 yards, and rushing for eight yards against UW, Clete Casper stood seventh in career passing yards at WSU and eighth in total offense.
