TUCSON, Arizona -- Ian Waltz threw an NCAA automatic qualifying mark to win the men's shot put while Molly Monroe, Casey Lektorich, and Bryan Jones each threw provisional qualifying marks in the javelin as the Washington State University men's and women's track and field teams competed in their opening meet of the outdoor season at the Willie Williams Classic at Tucson, Arizona.

Waltz, a senior All-American thrower from Post Falls, Idaho, competing in his first outdoor meet since 1998, tossed the shot 63-feet, 9 1/4 inches, certainly a highlight for the Cougs in the first day of the two-day meet and a clear message that the injury to his throwing hand which caused Waltz to take a medical redshirt season last year, is not bothering him now.

The Cougar women placed first through third in the javelin as Monroe, a senior from Ellensburg, Wash., threw an NCAA PQ and school record of 161-4 for the win. Freshman Casey Lektorich from Spokane, Wash., was second with a freshman school record and NCAA PQ mark of 155-4, while senior Anna Church (Yakima, Wash.) placed third at 139-10.

Bryan Jones, a junior from Nooksack, Wash., placed second in the men's javelin with an NCAA throw of 222-8. Ryan Nichols (junior, Selah, Wash.) was fifth with a mark of 202-3 and sophomore Russ Milam (Bozeman, Mont.) finished sixth with a lifetime best throw of 201-2. Arizona's Ola Larson won the event with a throw of 232-6.

Jeannette Martus, a junior from Livonia, Mich., cleared 12-7 1/2 for third place in the women's pole vault, equaling her school-record indoor mark and snagging an NCAA PQ. WSU freshman Stephanie Robinett (Bremerton, Wash.) placed 11th with a height of 10-2.

The second day of the meet resumes at noon Saturday.
