NEW YORK CITY -- Washington State University Athletic Hall of Fame member Bernard Lagat won the 5,000-meter race with an American record time of 13-minutes, 7.15 seconds Saturday, Feb. 11, at the 105th Millrose Games at the Armory New Balance Track & Field Center in New York City.

Lagat, age 37, lives and trains in Tucson, Ariz., crushed the previous U.S. 5k record of Galen Rupp, a time of 13:11.44. But Rupp was in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Saturday, breaking Lagat's two-mile record by a mere second. Lagat is the owner of a record eight Wanamaker Mile titles, all run at the former site of the Millrose Games, Madison Square Gardens.

The Millrose Games 5k race had three American records fall as University of Arizona runner Lawi Lalang, Lagat's training partner, broke the collegiate record at 13:08:28, and Edward Cheserek, a Kenyan who is a junior at St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, broke the national high school record with a time of 13:57:04.

In a story by the New York Daily News posted Feb. 11, Lagat said post-race, "We (Lagat and Lalang) came here with one aim: to break the American record. It was teamwork tonight, because we all wanted one thing, to get those records."
