PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State's Kate Benz recorded a double-double of 16 points and 23 rebounds to lead the Cougars to a 67-46 win over Team Concept in women's basketball exhibition action, Saturday at Bohler Gym.
Benz's rebound performance would have been a single-game school record if it had occurred in the regular season. The sophomore from Portland, Ore., tallied 18 defensive and five offensive boards in leading the Cougars to 54-36 rebounding advantage.
"I know what I am going to get out of Kate," WSU Head Coach Sherri Murrell said. "Defense and rebounding is all about hustle. She does that. She makes a difference on our team."
With the game tied at six nearly four minutes into the opening half, WSU went on a 10-0 run to take a 16-6 lead at the 9:11 mark. The Cougars maintained their 10 point advantage at 26-16 at the halftime break.
Team Concept, a touring team made up of former collegiate players, closed to within seven at 41-34 with 9:43 remaining. WSU ran off six consecutive points to open its lead back to double digits at 47-34 with 8:28 remaining.
Team Concept pulled to within single digits at 52-44 with 4:32 left but WSU closed out the game on a 15-2 run to post its final margin of victory.
WSU shot 26-of-62 (41.9 percent) for the game including 15-of-30 in the second half. Conversely, Team Concept shot 19-of-67 (28.4 percent) including 6-of-30 in the first half.
WSU suited up seven players for the exhibition as the team was without the services of Crystal Blue and Jordan McCormick, who both sat out with injuries, and Charmaine Jones, who was suspended for the game for violating team rules (missing class).
"We didn't throw everything out tonight because of our numbers but we worked on our trapping defense and I was pleased," Murrell said. "We executed it well."
The Cougars played their first game at Bohler Gym since Dec. 10, 1996 when the team faced Stanford.
WSU completes the exhibition portion of its schedule Saturday, Nov. 13 against Baden Sports at Friel Court. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
