Clinkenbeard Receives Conference Leadership Scholarship

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- Cicely Clinkenbeard, of Washington State University, and Walter Chun, of the University of California, Berkeley, were named as the winners of the 2001-02 Cooper Tire/Pac-10 Leadership Award, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Pac-10 corporate sponsor Cooper Tire, in conjunction with the Pacific-10 Conference and Pac-10 Properties, established the Cooper Tire/Pac-10 Leadership Award in 2002. Awarded to one male and one female student-athlete each year, these scholarships for postgraduate study are designed to recognize student-athletes who have served on their institutional Student-Athlete Advisory Committees (SAAC) and demonstrated leadership.

Clinkenbeard is a four-year letterwinner in track and field at Washington State from Okanogan, Wash.. She was an All-American triple jumper and also competed as a heptathlete. Clinkenbeard served as team captain for one year. Her classroom strengths were evident when she earned Pac-10 All-Academic first team honors in 1999, 2000 and 2002, and earned Verizon/CoSIDA national Academic All-America second team honors. She was a member of her campus Student-Athlete Advisory Council for four years, president for one year and a representative at the Pac-10 Student-Athlete Forum. Clinkenbeard completed her undergraduate work in May of 2001 in Fine Arts and Computer Graphics with a 3.87 GPA. She will complete her graduate work in the Master of Arts program at the Murrow School of Communication in May of 2003.

Chun, was the team captain all three years he lettered in golf at California. He earned Academic All-American honors as well as Pac-10 All-Academic honors in 2001 and 2002. Chun was a member of his campus SAAC for two years and was a representative at the Pac-10 Student-Athlete Forum. Chun completed his undergraduate work in December 2001 in Business with a 3.38 GPA. He will complete his graduate work in Education in May of 2003.
