Sept. 16, 2004

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State women's golf team is headed to Sunriver, Ore., Sept. 20-22, for the NCAA Women's Golf Fall Preview Invitational.

"This is the number one ranked women's tournament leading to the NCAA Championship," Head Coach Walt Williams said.

The tournament field includes 21 teams: WSU, host Oregon State, defending national champion UCLA, Oregon, USC, Arizona, Arizona State, Washington, Stanford, California, Oklahoma State, Duke, Vanderbilt, Texas, Ohio State, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Auburn, Texas A&M, and New Mexico. Of the 21 teams, 17 are ranked in the Golfweek preseason top-30.

The 54-hole tournament will be held at the par-71, 6,300 yard Meadows Course, and will consist of 18 holes each day.

The WSU women are coming off an impressive showing in which they finished 2nd at the Notre Dame Invitational. The team was led by senior two-time All-American Kim Welch, who finished tied for 2nd place. Junior Ana Kostina is coming off a 6th place finish, while seniors Maria Kostina and Jay-Lee Longbottom each tied for 12th. "We had a great start to our season," Williams said. "All the kids played well on a difficult golf course."

The Cougars are one of four teams not ranked in the Golfweek preseason top-30 heading into the Fall Preview. "We are probably seeded 20th out of the 21 teams heading into this tournament," Williams said. "We're going to get a chance to see how good we are, and to see if we can knock off any of these teams."

Live scoring during the tournament can be found at www.golfstat.com. Results after each day of competition will also be posted on www.wsucougars.com.
