AUSTIN, Taxas -- The Washington State University women won the team title and the Cougar men finished fourth at the Longhorn Invitational Team Track & Field Championship Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus at Austin.

This was a very prestigious win for the Cougar women, defeating perennial national powerhouses Louisiana State and Texas. WSU scored 160 points followed by LSU 149, Texas 115, Rice 82, and Texas A&M 61. Hosts, the Texas men, won the team title with 185 points followed by Texas A&M 116, LSU 99, WSU 94, and Minnesota 59.

"I think that it's thrilling that we come to a meet like this in Texas and beat LSU and Texas, two of the top women's track and field teams over the last decade who have dominated the scene indoor and out," Cougar coach Rick Sloan said. "For our women to have wins over UCLA, LSU and Texas all in the same year, I think that speaks volumes for the direction our program is going and the excitement that we have about it. We just want to keep that ball rolling and going into the Pac-10 Championships have our people all healthy and perform at the highest level that we can."

Andrea Thornton was a double winner for the WSU women with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying discus mark of 51.92m/170-4, and a hammer throw of 58.52m/192-0. Shannon Rance was third in both events.

"First time over 170-feet for Andrea in the discus," Sloan said. "She had a good series with her last throw in the low 170s, maybe 172, but she foot-fouled it. Great series and great distance by Andrea."

In the pole vault, Jeannette Martus improved her school record and NCAA PQ mark by clearing a height of 3.87m/12-8 1/4 for second place. Karla McGee improved her freshman school record mark with her third-place leap of 3.80m/12-5 1/2. Stephanie Robinett was fourth with the same mark as McGee.

Megan Maynard improved her school record in the steeplechase with her winning time of 10:51.23. In the same race, Ana Cabrera ran 11:57.14 for fifth and Beth Welander was sixth at 12:09.25.

Whitney Evans won the high jump at 1.73m/5-8 with Briana Willis second at 1.67m/5-5 3/4, after battling the Texas winds.

WSU freshman Bree Skinner finished seventh (11.91w) in the 100m dash, and eighth (24.53w) in the 200m dash. Fellow frosh Erin Reed placed fifth in the 400m dash at 55.76 while Tiffany Giles did not compete in the final due to problems with her quadriceps.

In the 800m final, Angelita Green placed fourth (2:13.74) and Hiliary Smith seventh (2:19.51). Anna Blue and Ryan Gilmore, WSU's one-two punch in Friday night's 5k race, finished 10th and 11th in Saturday's 1500m race.

Agneta Rosenblad grabbed third in the high hurdles (13.39w) but Tamara Gulley false-started and was disqualified. In the intermediate hurdles, Randi Smith was third at 59.22 and Sarah Odonkor was sixth at 1:06.31.

"Agneta ran a strong race. She got out and ran a real competitive race against some of the top hurdlers in the nation and did a great job," Sloan said. "Down the backstretch of the intermediate hurdles, there was a huge headwind into the face of the runners so it kind of played with their steps."

In the triple jump, Blessing Ufodiama was fourth (12.14m/39-10w) and Alison Eldridge was fifth (11.83m/38-9 3/4w).

On the WSU men's side, Matt Alverson won the high jump, clearing 2.11m/6-11, and teammate Ezra Gordon placed fifth at 1.94m/6-4 1/4.

Freshman Anthony Buchanan raced to a third place finish in the 100m dash with a time of 10.38 but was aided by a 4.2mps wind. Buchanan pulled up after the start of the 200m dash, fearful of his legs tightening up and causing injury. Dan Brink was sixth in the 200m at 22.30w. Anson Henry was not able to race Saturday due to a sore hamstring.

Eric Dudley and Steve Dwyer were the workhorses in the hurdles Saturday. Both ran season-best time in the high hurdles with Dudley fifth (14.34w) and Dwyer sixth (14.40w). In the intermediate hurdles, Dudley was second (51.63) and Dwyer fifth (53.81).

"Significant improvements on both of their PRs in the high hurdles, even with the wind," Sloan said. "They looked good racing. I look forward to them improving their times down the road."

In the steeplechase, Scott Johnson finished third in spite of hitting the last barrier and falling. Jon Welsh was fourth and Kyle Barker fifth in slower times than run already this season. Ian Johnson was 10th in the 1500m (4:00.84).

Bryan Preuss and Rick Collins cleared 5.00m/16-4 3/4 in the pole vault for sixth and seventh places, respectively.

Justin Nikbakhsh-Tali was fourth in the triple jump at 13.73m/45-0 1/2w.

Sam Lightbody finished third in both the shot put and discus, with Shaun Straka fifth in the shot. Vinnie Pecht second and Cameron Graves seventh in the discus.

"Overall, I'm a little bit concerned about the health of our team and making sure that we have people healthy going into the final stand of the season," Sloan said. "We want to make sure we don't have people beat up before we get to the Pac-10 Championship. We got through this meet, realistically I was hoping our men could have been second place. I don't think we could have caught Texas by any stretch of the imagination, but certainly we could have been up ahead of Texas A&M at 116 points if we could have had people racing and doing things they are capable of doing."

WSU hosts the Second Annual Cougar Invitational Meet this weekend with the collegiate meet Friday, and the high school meet Saturday at Mooberry Track.
