SALT LAKE CITY - The Washington State soccer team (4-2-1) lost to Utah (5-2-1) 4-1 Thursday, at Ute Field in Salt Lake City. Ute Chelsea Card scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner with under a minute left in the first half.
"We learned a valuable lesson today," Head Coach Matt Potter said. "The habits we tried to instill in each other didn't show up today. Credit goes to Utah for the way they played... for making us chase the game and ultimately punishing us for it. We did show progress in bringing the score back to 2-1 in the second half but now we'll move forward, regroup and look forward to Saturday."
Utah's Melissa Wayman scored the first goal of the match at the 11:01 mark, finishing a Kim Lloyd free kick.
Card gave the Utes the 2-0 lead with 52 seconds left in the half after receiving a through pass from Amanda Feigt and beating WSU goalkeeper Katie Hultin with the one-one-one opportunity. Hultin recorded two saves in the match.
Washington State forward Haley Thompson-Miller brought the score to 2-1 14 minutes into the second half to score her second goal of the season. Thompson-Miller received a pass from Brooke Bemis and scored on Utah keeper Ashley Mason with a shot in the lower-left corner of the goal.
Utah regained the two goal lead at the 61:52 mark following consecutive passes from Erin Pruit to Feigt who crossed the ball from the left-side to Hailey Marsh who scored.
Card scored the final goal of the match in the 80th minute, firing a 10-yard shot into the right-corner of the Cougar goal. Marsh and Kiley Jones assisted the goal.
The Cougars will take on Brigham Young Saturday, in a 6:30 p.m. match that will be televised on BYU-TV that is available on satellite or Dish Network.
