Track & Field Hosts Fourth Annual WSU Open Indoor Meet

COUGARS IN UNIFORM FOR INDOOR TRACK OPENER: Washington State University's indoor track and field teams open the 2006 season with the Fourth Annual WSU Indoor Open...the WSU Indoor Facility's Mondo track will feature racing at 60m, 200m, 400m, mile, 800m and 3000m with 60m hurdles as well as a co-ed 4x400m relay...jumping and throwing field events will be contested on the turf inside the oval...men's 35-pound and women's 20-pound weight throws take place Friday, Jan. 20, at 6 p.m...remaining field events will begin Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with running events set to start at 10:30 a.m...complete results will be posted on the WSU Athletics website, www.wsucougars.com, following the meet's completion.

WANT TO COMPETE? OR JUST WATCH: All competitors are to register online no later than noon, Jan. 18, at www.DirectAthletics.com for a $5 entry fee...late entries will be charged an additional $15 for signing up the day of the meet...spectators may watch both Friday and Saturday's events free of charge...free parking is available in the Yellow Lot between Beasley Coliseum and the WSU Tennis Courts or behind and below the IPF in the newest parking lot on campus.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: Four Cougars have been included in Trackwire Online's Dandy Dozen first list of the 2006 indoor season...the Dandy Dozen is, a power ranking of the top 12 athletes and relay squads in each NCAA event...All-American pole vaulters Tyson Byers (5th) and Tamara Diles (6th) are listed as are All-American multi-events specialists Julie Picker (7th) and Diana Pickler (8th).

ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 33rd season with the Cougar track program; 12th year as a head coach, 11th year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program...he is joined by associate coach Debra Farwell, and assistant coaches Jason Drake (Head Coach Cross Country), Mark Macdonald, Ellannee Richardson and Matt McGee...volunteer coach Andrea Thornton returns for her third year with the program.

RETURNING COUGAR WSU OPEN CHAMPIONS: Seven WSU women and seven Cougar men who won events at the 2005 WSU Open will be competing in the 2006 meet - La Shawnda Porter (200m), Collier Lawrence (mile), Haley Paul (800m), Meghan Leonard (3000m), Diana Pickler (60m hurdles), Katie Miller (long jump), McKenzie Burgess Garberg (shot put), James McSwain (60m dash), John Cassleman (400m), Justin Ireland (800m), Andrew Jones (3000m), Bob Frey (60m hurdles), Kyle Eaton (high jump), and Ryan Thomas (pole vault)...Paul's 800m time of 2:14.40i was a meet record.

COUGARS AND THE MPSF INDOOR HISTORY: Because the Pacific-10 Conference does not sponsor indoor track and field competition, Washington State University competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for an indoor track conference title, joining teams from the Pac-10, Mountain West, Western Athletic, West Coast and Big West Conferences...MPSF teams currently ranked in Trackwire Online's Top 25 Men's Teams include: t7. Arizona, 11. Oregon, t20. USC; MPSF teams currently ranked in Trackwire Online's Top 25 Women's Teams include: 5. Stanford, 6. Arizona State, t10. UCLA and California, t15. Oregon, t20. Northern Arizona and Cal Poly...at the 2005 MPSF Indoor Championships, Cougar women finished sixth while the men were seventh...Diana Pickler won the women's pentathlon and the high jump.

ABOUT THE COUGAR WOMEN: Multi-events All-Americans Julie and Diana Pickler along with Katie Miller return to lead the Cougar women in several events...after a strong fall cross country season, All-American Haley Paul should do well indoors...another All-American, Tamara Diles returns for her final season of pole vault...Pac-10 high jump champion Robin Mikesh also returns for her senior year...other notable returnees include Nicole Hatcher and La Shawnda Porter (sprints), Collier Lawrence, Kelly Ramirez and Meghan Leonard (distance), Kaylee Gardner and Sarah Burns (triple jump), and McKenzie Burgess Garberg (throws)...newcomers expected to have an impact include Jeanne Newman (200m), Lorraine King (400m), Sara Trané (800m), Tiffany Maskulinski (pole vault), and Catie Schuetzle (triple jump).

ABOUT THE COUGAR MEN: All-American pole vaulter Tyson Byers returns for his junior season and Pac-10 runner-up sprinter James McSwain brings senior leadership...other notable returnees include Jaycee Robertson (sprints), John Cassleman (hurdles), All-American Danny Wolf (3000m), Phil Hinrichs, Alex Grant and Andrew Jones (distance), Ryan Thomas and Kyle Eaton (high jump), Martin Boston (jumps), Drew Ulrick (throws), and Brandon Brownell (multi-events)...among the Cougar newcomers to watch are Brian Woods, Justin Woods, and Devin Timpson (sprints), Sam Stone and Jimmy Scholfield (middle distance), Robert Williams (hurdles), Moreno Zapata (triple jump), and Matt Lamb, Chase Mancuso, Vic Asher and Clint Osborn (throwers).
