SECOND ANNUAL COUGAR INVITATIONAL AT MOOBERRY: The Second Annual Cougar Invitational Track & Field Meet takes place this Friday and Saturday with over 800 athletes expected to compete during the two-day meet at Mooberry Track on the WSU Pullman campus...Friday's events are solely for the collegiate participants, with many area colleges and universities as well as community colleges athletes competing...Saturday is totally devoted to high school participants with teams and individuals coming from throughout the state of Washington in addition to competitors from Idaho, Oregon, and Canada...field events begin at 10 a.m. both days with collegiate running events set for 1 p.m. Friday and prep running events set for 12:30 p.m. Saturday...a two-day ticket can be purchased at $3 for students and senior citizens, $7 adults, and $15 for family...single day tickets are $2, $5, and $10...tickets can be purchased at the Mooberry Track entrance, off Colorado Street.
SPECIAL REUNION: All four members of the 1951 Washington State College men's two-mile relay team, which set the record at the Drake Relays, will be introduced prior to the running events at the Cougar Invitational Saturday...Lee Cave, Bill Parnell, Clem Eischen and George Stimac are celebrating their 50-year reunion of their Drake Relays victory but will be in Pullman instead of Des Moines, Iowa...a complete release on this reunion can be found on the www.wsucougars.com webpage.
WAZZU WOMEN STORM TEXAS: The Cougar women's team captured the Longhorn Team Invitational Championship Saturday at Austin, defeating perennial national powerhouses Louisiana State and host team, Texas. Andrea Thornton was a double winner with an NCAA PQ discus mark of 51.92m/170-4, and a hammer throw of 58.52m/192-0. Freshman Shannon Rance was third in both events after placing second in the shot put with an NCAA PQ and lifetime-best throw of 15.01m/49-3. Thornton was third in the shot at 14.18m/46-6 1/4. In the pole vault, Jeannette Martus improved her school record and NCAA PQ mark by clearing a height of 3.87m/12-8 1/4 for second place. Karla McGee improved her freshman school record mark with her third-place leap of 3.80m/12-5 1/2. Stephanie Robinett was fourth with the same mark as McGee. Megan Maynard improved her school record in the steeplechase with her winning time of 10:51.23. Whitney Evans won the high jump at 1.73m/5-8 with Briana Willis second at 1.67m/5-5 3/4, after battling the Texas winds. Anna Blue and Ryan Gilmore finished one-two in the 5k race. Agneta Rosenblad grabbed third in the high hurdles (13.39w) and in the long jump (6.04m/19-9 3/4). Strong performances from Bree Skinner (7th - 100m, 8th - 200m), Erin Reed (5th - 400m), Angelita Green (4th - 800m), Hilary Smith (7th - 800m), Blessing Ufodiama (4th - triple jump), Alison Eldridge (5th - triple jump), Casey Lektorich (2nd - javelin), and Ellannee Richardson (4th - javelin) put points on the board for the Cougs. The WSU men finished fourth with Matt Alverson winning the high jump (2.11m/6-11) and Ezra Gordon fifth. Freshman Anthony Buchanan raced to a third place finish in the 100m dash with a time of 10.38 but was aided by a 4.2mps wind. Eric Dudley and Steve Dwyer ran season-best time in the high hurdles with Dudley fifth (14.34w) and Dwyer sixth (14.40w) and in the intermediate hurdles, Dudley was second (51.63) and Dwyer fifth (53.81). Sam Lightbody finished third in both the shot put and discus, with Shaun Straka fifth in the shot. Vinnie Pecht was second and Cameron Graves seventh in the discus.
ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 28th season with the Cougar track program (seventh year as a head coach, sixth year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program)...Sloan was named USTCA 2001 Men's West Region Coach of the Year and grabbed the MPSF 2001 Men's Coach of the Year...he has also earned the District VIII Coach of the Year in 1998, 1999 and 2000...he is joined by associate coach Debra Lombardi Farwell, assistant coaches Dr. James Li, Mark Macdonald, Kris Grimes, and Francesca Sewell...WSU's volunteer assistant coaches are Dan O'Brien and Bernard Lagat.
